Hi, what do people think of this synth? Would it be a good buy for a first synth? I have read that its lay out is quite simple.

    Have one myself.

If youre a synth purist dont buy it.

If your looking for a fat-sounding, easy to use synth go for it.

It a great synth for the money. full of features. arpeggiator, MIDI out ect..

It was my first proper synth. I learned a lot about synthesis from it. Super reliable too.

    ugh. no. NEVER.

horrible horrible synth IMO. the fat sounds just dont sit with me and the overall feel of the tones is very plastic.. if you know what i mean.

Yes, it's a simple layout. So is the Nord Lead and the Novation KS. However, the SH-201 doesn't sound anywhere near as good as those other two. The Korg MS2000 also has a simple layout. It is better sounding than a 201, but not as good as a Nord or Novation.

So personally I wouldn't recommend that particular Roland.
