    Hi,

I'll be in cork at the weekend and was hoping to get a recommendation for a golf course to pass a few hours on saturday morning. Will probably be on my own so not looking to spend too much on green fees. Maybe 25 or 30 euro.

are there any open competitions on this time of year where I could join up with some other golfers or is that all finished with for the winter?
    Cheers

Saturdays are always going to be busy, but you have a good lot to choose from.

The one closest to the city centre - and probably your best bet - is Mahon, which is a municipal. It's well maintained too.

There's Douglas, but you may not get out on a Sat morning. Cork (Little Island) will be the same and would be over your price limit as well.

Water Rock is a play and pay course just outside the city and should do you very nicely, or look at the thread here on Castlemartyr - it's a bit far, but it's in superb condition by all accounts.

If you head west you've got Blarney, Lee Valley and Muskerry, of which Muskerry will probably be reserved for members.

Muskerry is booked out till 14:Cheers Saturday morning could be hard to find a course which is open to green fees, if you are playin you will have to be on the tee before 12:30 to allow yourself 18 holes. In my opinion I would pick CorkGC http://www.corkgolfclub.ie/ but it is expensive and would defo be closed to public, Lee Valley http://www.leevalleygcc.ie/ would be my next Choice 0217331721Blarney http://www.blarneygolfresort.com/golf-hotel also would be a good choice and is also in good condition considering the awful conditions..If all those courses are members only on a Saturday Water Rock would be your best bet all the information here.http://www.waterrockgolfcourse.com/index.htm WaterRock would prob be the easiest to get into on Saturday.
Hope this helps you some bit anyway, regards Galvin66

For the money you're talking, Mahon G.C. is definitely your best bet. It's a municipal course, owned and well maintained by the City Council. A little bit rough around the edges at times but it has a few very challenging holes also. Members play weekend morning competitions but they only have the 1st tee for about 2 hours, I think. If you ring 021 4292543, you should be able to make a reservation. It's less than ten minutes from the city centre. I have no connection except that I live in the area and played all my early golf there, paying green fees.

Mitchelstown has opens on the weekend. Should get a time id say. Not too costly either. Nice course but can vary depending on the holes in play. Bit outside the city as well but not many options for opens or weekend green fees at this time of year.

Enjoy the 4th and the 15th - two of my favourite holes: the 4th is brute strength and the river in front of the green is wide; the 15th needs guile to make your way through the trees.

So for a long time I have wanted to play Cork Golf Club - got the chance on Friday, on a perfect day.

And it lived up, to the build up - I loved the course, has real character like Cork herself. You sometimes think of Fota on some of the holes, but then the course can change dramatically. Almost like 3 - 6s in a way.

Sadly - I played the worst game of golf in about 3 years - but didn't stop the enjoyment.

Great holes like 2 and the run along water - 3 and 4 and 5 - then to jump in and out of quarry in an unexpected route. Makes it a great course , with real character.

The course , doesn't look that difficult, but was hard to tell from where I was with my game.

If you are looking for a course with variety , it certainly is , with holes with water and long and short holes, wind , doglegs , elevated and up hill holes. Real surprise around every rock.

The greens are mature , perfect condition, fast and treacherous.

The one criticism, is the almost unnecessary (considering plot size) crossing of holes at tees and greens.

The clubhouse is class - and the Jimmy Bruen cabinet seemed appropriate and worth the trip alone , considering his RCD record is now gone.

The food was, old style hearty good golf club food , and the drink was a nice rounder up and warmer up for the day and night ahead.

As you leave Cork Golf club, you think of the life men had in some of these establishments - it seems to be a life and time out of reach of most lads that play golf these days. The constant talk, of time and money - seems an age away, from what the past seemed to be like in some of these clubs. They look like places you went to and relaxed , and mixed and wined and dined - the life , the life :D

The day was rounded off, with about 12 Beamishs each, around the quiet corner story filled dirty pubs of the inner city. If Beamish did days ................. perfect.

For the cure and to shake the cob webs, we decided to hit Waterrock today.
The contrast with Cork Golf Club was all too obvious. It is golf targeting another market. There was casual casual golf. A 5 ball and slow slow slow. But we didn't mind. Amazingly was still only 3hr45mins

Waterrock - is a fine golf course for what it is , there are some very good holes on the course and you are always happy with a par on the infamous and testing 12. Almost had a slam dunk hole in 1 on 3. That would have made my 2 days.

On the back nine, there are some very good holes like 10 to 13 - and a great testing finish 15 to 18. Whilst it is entry level golf , it is not that cheap , but good facilities for food and drink etc.

A little bit of the golf on the tv and a dry out.

Cork is a great city - it is also a great place for golf. But like the character of the Corkonians - it takes time to get to know the golf there and to get to know them.
