Macbook Pro to hdmi

Pardon me, im sure this has been rehashed to death, but there is something that i am not quite grasping.

has anyone connected their macbook pro to hdmi?

my main question is about audio.

i know you connect the mini dvi to dvi to hdmi adapter and run it through with no sound.

how do you get sound then? i am unhappy that you would need two cables, but what can you do.

where do you connect the sound? do you have to go 3.5 to rca adapter? i am unsure that the sound then would come as the tv would be on the hdmi channel and not the rca one?

is there a dvi to hdmi that incorporates a 3.5mm slot to put in the sound from the macbook?

would gladly accept further info on this as i am quite puzzled. (i am planning on getting a macbook pro 15 and the only downside to a windows machine is the lack of hdmi output).

and links to relevant cables would be appreciated!

as far as I know HDMI is 100% compatibile with DVI in terms of video signal. As you noticed its missing audio. HDMI audio is in digital format so any cable incorporating 3.5 jack won't work.

Did you try to use optical cable? audio ports on macbooks pro are dual, analog (3.5mm rca) and optical. still two cables though

thanks, but the question that arises, is where do i connect that 3.5mm from the macbook to exactly for it to work at the same time as the hdmi video input

what about VGA and pc input on tv? I think on most tv's you can connect two rca plugs with sound with that. Video quality won't be much worse

There is something like that for the current MacBooks/MBPs that all have mini Displayport:

(Quite pricey for what it is though).

Haven't come across one from DVI though. I simply use external speakers (Creative Gigaworks T40s) since the audio is superior to what my HDTV produces anyway...

Check the back of your TV for a 3.5mm audio in port. On the back of my TV there is a VGA port and 3.5mm audio jack port, and one of the HDMI ports is labeled DVI. If I plug the Macbook into that HDMI port and the plug the audio into the 3.5mm plug I get both sound and video on the same channel.

    Kinda the same on mine.

HDMI into TV for picchers, and phono for the audio. I had to select the audio input in the menu system to be linked to that video input.

For that you'd have to buy an optical cable and set the headphone out to digital

sorry at the back of the tv there are only the following:

    2 scarts
    1 svideo in
    1 composite (y, r, w) in
    2 hdmi in.

    no 3.5 :(

In regards to the video feed I picked up a DVI to HDMI cable in Heatons for less than €5 and works perfectly. (similar DVI to HDMI cable in Currys which is almost next door for around €80)

For sound I connect into my surround amp using a 3.5mm audio jack cable.

Are you sure there's no individual audio input ?

If not you will have to use SCART adapter, like this and then a phono to 3.5 adapter.

But you said that you don't have 3.5mm input in your tv so this cable is not what you're looking for. Take a closer look, there is DVI+3.5mm on one end and HDMI+3.5mm on the other. If you want to have a digital audio over the HDMI the yoke which I posted before (ebay link) is the only way to go.
