3 Club Competition - What Clubs to Bring?

    Hi All,

I have been invited to play in a 3 Club society event in Cork in 2 weeks time.

I struggle to play with 14 clubs - so was wondering what clubs I should use?

I'm thinking 3 wood (driving, fairway and putting), 6 iron and 54 degree wedge.

Anyone got suggestions? (I play off 16)

    Paul

Played in only one of these before but it was slightly different. We had to take 3 clubs AND a putter to avoid damage to the greens.
I have heard of 3 club games where one club must be a putter also. That would make it a lot more difficult Id say.

I would go with 19deg rescue, 6 iron and PW.

Think the PW will serve you better than the 54 deg wedge out to maybe 120 yds while still being able to do all the things a gap wedge can do, depending on how you use it.

6 iron is a jack of all trades, very versatile.

Rescue for me just a personal choice, does everything a 3 wood can do but easier to access a buried ball in the rough.
Then again if there's placing on I'd go with the 3 wood.

Depends on the course, but if it was a round on my home course i'd go rescue, SW and putter.

Cheers for putting this up OP, have one of these on this weekend in Carton and was caught over which clubs to go with. Haven't been informed that a putter is mandatory so had been thinking 4-iron, 8-iron and 52 degree. Or drop the 4 and use a rescue... Not a notion what to do?!?!

Never played in one but Rescue, 8 iron and putter for me. I chip with an 8 a lot anyway and you'd expect 30-40+% of your shots to be on the green so a putter would be essential IMO.
Rescue and 8 iron caters for most par 4's... close the face for 160 yards, hit it soft for 110.
2 Rescues for longer par 4's and for par 5's. Stay out of bunkers and don't short-side yourself though!

Why is a putter not mandatory? How else you would putt on the green?

    I'd go:

    Driver, 7 iron and putter

For me it would be rescue, 9 iron, putter.

In fairness it is what you feel comfartable hitting re your middle club choice. I can hit a hard 9 or a soft 9, pitch around the green as well.

This competition is more about feel than full shots.

rescue, 8 and putter. never played in one but a great idea to mix it up.

I would say that a putter is mandatory.

The next most important club is one that you are most comfortable off the tee. You want to be hitting the fairways and getting a reasonable distance. I went for a rescue wood (4 iron loft).

Finally pick a club that is good from about 150 in. I picked an 8 iron as it's fairly flexible - reasonable length and good around the greens.

Lads, just to clear up a point, I've heard of a few of these over the years, and a putter is always a given in these competitions.

So you have the choice of three clubs, and you also bring your putter but this isn't included in your three club choice.

    I hope...;)

3 Wood- Will hopefully keep u out of trouble, will be used way more than the driver, also i find easy to putt with.6 iron mid length which could be used for most 2nd shots to par 4's54degree wedge, if your chipping around the green is good being able to stick the ball close there would be no need for a putter as 3woods are easy enough to putt with too, 54 would be vital in my opinion even if you get stuck in a bunker or lob shots over water , clubs like 7irons would be much harder to use.IN MY OPINION!!

Rescue, 9 iron and putter. Up to half your shots in a regular round can be with the putter. I think you'd be foolish if you didn't take one with you.

Id go with a rescue, 8 iron and putter. The rescue and 8 iron are the ones I am most comfortable with. putters a no brainer!

I must try a 2 hour round sometime with just rescue, 8 iron and putter... wouldn't be surprised to have a half decent score either on a calm day!

For my home course I would go with driver, 8 iron and putter. Its a relatively long course, not many holes when its a drive and 8 or 9 iron, more like drive and a rescue 4/5 iron depending on the wind, so the driver in the bag is a must

I broke my putter last Sunday leaning on it to pick up the flag on the 1st. I had to putt for the rest of the front 9 with my HiBore 19° rescue. It was actually fine within 20 feet, and perfect within 6 feet, but I found judging the pace on long puts very tricky. Still, not an impossible club to putt with, so ditching the putter may be a good move, if you practice a little with your 3-wood.

I would recommend 'thinking' your way around the course first. Write down the clubs you might play at each hole in a typical game, you may be suprised how few you really need. I play for the winter with putter, 52°W, PW, 8i, 6i, 19° Rescue, and my scores don't seem to suffer that much.

On my home coarse I'd play 7 , sw, and putter on a parkland coarse I'd play
    Driver, 8 and putter
