GUYS AND WINE IN PUBS

Hi, I like wine, mostly red, I'd rather have it than beer any day.
Thing is , what happens when I visit the local and say to the mates " This is it lads, tonight I'm gonna be true to myself and order a bottle of Trapiche Oak Cask and sod the lot of you." I'll tell you what happens, " if you attempt to order wine we're going".

Now, I know they wouldn't literally go but it would make them feel uncomfortable.

What is it with wine in pubs?

I saw a documentary last year and it covered the same topic but it was based in the UK. Some hard lads were asked if they would drink wine in a pub and they all said are you mad, drinking wine in a boozer, Then one said " wouldn't touch red or white in a pub, but Rose is fine, and all his friends said, yeah rose is ok but none of that red or white sh!t" LOL.

    What is it with wine??????

I'd drink wine and I'd order it in a pub. Probably splash for the bottle though of whatever's around 20quid and I ain't a fan of red.

I'm not a pansy but I'm no tough guy and I don't play football and I don't have hardmen mad lad friends that would walk out of a pub if I was drinking wine.

Start a "Men drinking wine" club or something and see how far you get. Wine's better sometimes...

Real men drink wine. Pansies drink buck or dud or whatever the regular pint of watery yellow piss fizz is these days.

I drink wine in bars. Not often though due to the poor the choice and the price but I'm happy to down a bottle every now and then. In a lot of clubs it make life a lot easier to order a bottle of white or something bubbly and keep it on your table in an ice bucket rather then having to fight your way to the bar every 20 minutes for pishpoor beers or overpriced (and badly made) cocktails.
If my friends were going to be embarrised by my drinking wine then that would only spur me on to do so. What a stoopid attitude for them to hold.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

I wouldn't drink wine in a pub because pubs serve shocking supermarket wine which is too warm (red), over priced, and left in the light usually.

    No thanks.

Its just an image thing, If one of my mates was to order a bottle they would get a little bit of stick but nothing serious, but I wouldnt care what they were drinking! Nor wud I give a dam if I was a wine drinker and I ordered some and I got stick.....if the individual is happy and enjoying themselves who cares!!

Besides in my experience wine gives ya much more bang for your buck!

    Seriously?

When we're all out in the local, there's going to be a fair old mix on the table, chances are a few people are going to share a few bottles of wine, there'll be people on stouts and lagers, noone blinks an eyelid. Different strokes for different folk.

The only reason I'd never order wine is it completely disagrees with me. If you like it, then order it.

It kinda surprises me, seeing as we have this booze culture and wine is 12~14%

Not that I condone that thing but the guys who would sneer would prob be the guys who want to get pissed on their beers

Makes no sense of course. That said, wine in most pubs is of poor quality and over-priced (i.e. like everything else on offer). But I've noticed some pubs in Dublin improving in terms of selection of wines by the glass (as opposed to the usual screw-cap Carmen or Wolfblass dross). As some pubs make a greater effort to provide high-quality food, it makes sense that they improve their wine selection. If I'm going to have a good steak, I'd rather have a good glass of red than a pint.

This reminds me of when pubs began to serve imported German and Belgian beers in the late 90s. Ordering one of dem funny foreign beers in dat funny glass would often raise a few eyebrows, even in Dublin city centre. There are still pubs in Ireland where ordering anything but Guinness, Bulmers or Budweiser will earn you disapproving glances. Always a sign that the place is best avoided tbh.

I would have no problem with it, but in all honesty although the ladies would often get a quarter bottle of red, none of the lads have ever ordered wine in a bar and it would look a little odd if they did. Not sure why, but it just would.

    .

Please tell me that you have nothing against screw caps in general

Of course not, plenty of great Spanish and Argentinian screw caps. The usual 3 or 4 brands of quarter bottles that feature in most Irish pubs are a different matter entirely. But this is a little off-topic now ;)

I have a simple system for pubs and clubs as far as drink goes:

    1.Am I driving?

    1.a). Yes = order a soft drink.

    1.b). No = see question 2.

    2. Does it contain Alcohol?

    2.a). Yes = I'll drink it.

2.b). No = order something else that contains Alcohol.

As you can see wine falls nicely into this system, so like any other alcoholic beverage..put it in front of me and Ill drink it. :D

I know I am just wondering.

The reason that I ask is that if you look at the bottle being poured from, they very rarely reseal the bottle again (correctly) and leave it open to the air.

Grand if you got the bottle opened, not so good if it has been open since the weekend previously

True, it depends on how frequently wine is ordered in the bar. I've noticed several larger pubs in Dublin have installed decanting systems to prevent this kind of problem.

If I've someone to share with I'll order a bottle or two, usually just stick to glasses though. Depends on what kind of mood I'm in and strangely have never had anyone pass comment on my drinking wine.

I actually don't know any men who'd drink wine in a pub. It's weird now that I tihnk about it because quite a few of them would drinkit at home a fair but. Maybe men find pubs and pints intrinsically linked? It's just hardwired into us that that's what you drink when you're in a pub!

I personally would rarely drink wine and would much rather a pint so I'd never do it but I'd have no bother with anyone else doing it; the same way I'd have no problem with a woman drinking a pint or a man drinking an electric pink cocktail with straws, sparklers and umbrellas to beat the band!

They'd drink Rose, but not red or white! Why? I always thought rose was the least masculine of the lot of them.
I wonder if they served wine in pint glasses would these guys drink it then?

I don't drink wine. I don't like the taste, and it usually ****s me up pretty bad, even a small amount.

I know, thats what I thought about Rose. But as My da says "you don't have to ask an Englishman twice to put on a dress". My dads a bigot btw.

I couldn't care who drinks what or wears while drinking it as long as they're enjoying what they're doing.

I was in my local last night and considered buying some wine but I was more in the mood for a Guinness, but before I went out I had 2 glasses of red wine. I was ready to stay in with my wife with a nice bottle of red looking forward to a good movie but she announced that she wanted to catch up with the latest CSI/Without a Trace. So of to the pub I went.

I can only stand so many dead bodies.

I have to say, I've often drank wine in pubs. But only pubs that serve a dececnt selection. Pub beside me does a smacking Rioja called Museum Real. It's pricey, but on a special occasion or if other wine drinking friends are about I splash out on a bottle.

Also, I agree with others saying I'd be more tempted to buy a glass of wine if I thought it would make my friends feel uncomfortable. In fact, I'd probably go full hog and sip with me pinky finger sticking out. Lah de dah! :D

Not drinking means when we are out its usually for food or something else.

I would put it down to a price thing and shelling out 20 on a bottle of supermarket cheap chemical plonk would put any wine buff off so the offering is all wrong by the pubs.

Surely, if the offering was better people would try it.

I think the average bottle of wine in a pub is about 20euro(I could be wrong). For that you get about 4 glasses of wine. That works out at 5euro per glass. Thats not bad, granted it might not be a great wine, but a bottle of wine costs about the same as 4 pints of beer.
And for me it gets me in the mood that I like to be in, relaxed and talkative.

Plus I don't have to go to the mens room after each pint.

    similar situation in Waterford -
bar do stock decent quality 1/4 bottles -
what i do on a lads night out
is ask for a 1/4 white in a slim jim glass with ice -
no one knows what im drinking and dont care

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 805 ✭✭✭suey71

But the wine in a 1/4 bottle tastes awful. Is it that it is aged differently?
I just cant drink little bottles.
I have a weak stomach and they make me sick.

Good idea though with the Slim Jim.

Went to a week long music festival in Hungary this Summer. Pints of wine cost 2 euro, great value but God was I sick of the stuff by the weeks end.

I'd walk out too. It's piss.

If you order wine in a pub you'll get Blossom Hill (piss), Drostdy Hoff (piss) or some other 'spill in out by the hectolitre and the public will drink it' piss.

Wine is not for pubs and pubs are not for wine.

Wine doesnt agree wth me at all. Red in particular gives me terrible heartburn. My Dad loves the stuff though and drinks it at home and in the pub. I love a few pints of the black stuff though and wouldnt have any problem with a mate drinking wine in the pub.
