Want to add MP3 option to radio in 03 Passat

I have a 2003 VW Passat 1.8T 4 door saloon that has a CD player with 6 disc changer in the boot.

I never use CDs these days - have everything on MP3 in the house and use my Zune when outside of the house. I need to listen to lots of podcasts and audio books on MP3s as part of a course I'm doing so I want to add an option to play MP3s in the car.

I've tried several different FM Transmitters and found them more hassle than they're worth so I'd prefer to upgrade or replace the radio if necessary.

I know nothing about car radios but have a mate who is an electrician that I think can fit them so if I can find the right model to buy, I should be able to get it fitted ok.

I'd probably be prepared to pay up to around €250 if that was necessary. Only thing I don't like about the car is it doesn't have radio controls on the steering wheel and I find that's a great safety feature to have - is there any way to retro-fit that functionality at a reasonable price?

Bumping this in case anyone has any suggestions. I did do a search but didn't find anything particularly relevant, and nothing to indicate if I could retro-fit steering wheel controls so any pointers appreciated.

There is a part for I-Pod integration, but as you've a Zune it won't be of much use. I asked our phone kit fitters the same question about getting a Samsung MP3 player (as I'm cheap) wired in to my Honda. He got a bit technical with the explanation but I think the gist of it is that they wire an FM transmitter directly to the aerial input.

While it's an FM transmitter, the fact it's a physical connection means you should get crystal clear sound and no interferance. Don't know where you are based but I use www.jdm.ie for all that sort of thing.

Not 100% sure on the retro fitting of a MFSW. I think all the wiring for the part is there already on most VAG's and it's just a matter of connecting them, but one of the resident VAG heads on here would be better to give a definate. Still means you'd have to swap the airbag over and I wouldn't fancy going near explosives.
