I'm a big fan of Michael Haneke for the most part (think Hidden and The Piano Teacher in particular are wonderful films) and I think he has produced another extremely powerful piece of cinema here. Different stylistically from his other films (the black & white photography is stunning, and the shots and editing seem positively Saw-esque compared to the marathon takes in Hidden!) and the characters are extremely rich and engaging. Moments such as
the older sister explaining death to her brother, or the fantastic 'closed door' caning scene
are very powerful. Less outright shocking than you might expect from Haneke, although still a few
moments of incest, surprise suicides and violence
    - he certainly doesn't ignore the darker parts of society and human nature.

I can see why people criticise Hanekefor being a wee bit pretentious and removed on occassion, but this feels like his one of his more honest, emotional efforts. There are definitely few directors as intellectually stimulating though, and this is a fascinating look at pre WW1 (and post?) society, and (like Hidden) the secrets that go undiscussed in societies. A masterful piece of work, definitely worth checking out!

I was curious to see this film as it got the " Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival 2009" . I got to see this film last week and it was a refreshing ,polished and original story ,alot of what was not seen on screen or illuded to, added greatly to the power of the film .Johnny_ultimate describes it very well. I loved the brightness of the black and white photography in stark contrast to the dark undertones of narrative. Definitely Worth viewing on the big screen if you get the chance .

Just watched this last night and hugely enjoyed it. It is a very uncomfortable watch without any real violence. There is a tone of menace running through it.
The world created is so rich that you get completely involved. When you put it up against say the hurt locker, it shows that most years the movie of the year is not in English.

Very decent movie if a bit unsettling & haunting. Loved the cinematography & how the story unfolds.
Those kids were genuinely sinister & creepy.
