What to look for in a dentist?

    Hi Folks,

It's coming round to the time of year when I head for a checkup, but I've lost confidence a bit in my current dentist (my front teeth are fairly crooked and look a bit rounded and worn, towards the gum the teeth have white marks on them that look inconsistent with the rest of the tooth, and I've a bit of decay--I think--at top of one of my canines -- none of which have ever been mentioned by my current dentist)

Now that I'm finally out of college and have some income I want to find out about getting my teeth sorted out... but I'm not sure where to start. What's the 1, 2, 3 list of what I should be looking for in a new dentist/doing?

    Cheers,

Do you mind if I ask if you ever requested his/her advice on how you could improve the cosmetics of your teeth?. A checkup as the name implies is an examination to ascertain if the teeth are healthy and to diagnose any pathology present. Patients request options to improve cosmetics but this may have nothing to do with the health of their teeth, just the appearence. The white spots sound like flourosis and have probably been there since the teeth erupted, the dark areas near the gum may be staining or enamel erosion. If you like your dentist, ask him/her for advice, they will be happy to refer you to an orthodontist to have yout teeth straightened and/or the placement of veneers/crowns.
