My dad wants to get a new TV for xmas and was looking to get a 40". My dad being as lazy as he is, wants to buy it in powercity as its only up the road. Looking through the powercity website (www.powercity.ie) cam across a few within his price range (max €800), but was wondering what people would think is best for someone who will mainly use it for watching general digital tv (including sport) so a good contrast ratio would suit. I'd like to get a Full HD if I can as I know once he hears bout blu-ray etc. he'll want to get one.

I think he wants to get a sony, but a samsung or panasonic would be good too.

    Cheers!

Dont suppose you've thought about heading north? I've been researching tvs for a while, going to currys i'll save around 300 yo yo!

Sorry op, didnt realise how good a tv this is, LCD look amazing when i've saw them on display. Not a bad price here either, way cheaper than Komplett and pixmania anyway! Good post, might be tempted myself!

At 40", there is no visible difference between 720p and 1080p - in fact, SD picture is often better on a 720p as the processor has less scaling to do.
A lot of people watch 720p on a projector on a 100" screen and they are happy enough.
Accurate colours/blacks, lack of motion blur & judder, lack of image noise (compression artefacts, pixelation, screen-door effect) more important than head-line resolution. (Rant over)

Check out www.hdtvtest.co.uk and www.avforums.co.uk for reviews and compare prices on-line, richersounds, currys/dixons in NI etc. If you can get a good deal in powercity, then go for it.

+1 on b550. This crowd seems to like it a lot:

Have a look at their review of the same telly. Also, this tv also popped up here before, me thinks in relation to enabling media playback via secret menu. Divx from usb straight from the telly :D
