Infanticide- what's the big deal?

Ok, so I was at an abortion debate last night and one point kept coming up, infanticide. See, any reasonable person is pro-choice, it's obvious abortion isn't wrong. But otherwise reasonable people can sometimes get caught up in pro-life arguments, particularly the one that points to the lack of a clear line between abortion and infanticide.

What struck me as odd was that the pro-choicers started playing by the pro-lifer's rules. Agreeing that infanticide is wrong ( i guess thinking it might get them more supporters), despite the fact that this makes their argument contradict itself and they cannot hope to gain supporters. Instead of pandering to a small number of religious die-hards why not embrace the truth?

A newborn baby is dumb, very dumb. Your average farm animal is smarter than it. It has no self-conciousness, no proper conceptual grasp of anything, no ability to form proper memories, there is absolutely nothing meaningful going on up there. If we can kill adult pigs (intelligent as mammals go) with no problems, why do we have a problem killing newborn babies?

Is it because pigs don't have human genes? Well fetuses have human genes and we have already established there's nothing wrong with killing fetuses. Which means that argument is also irrelevant.

    Infanticide is safe,

Unlike abortion, infanticide does not place the mother in any danger. No surgery or risky procedures are involved and no damage will be done to the womans chances of becoming pregnant again when the time is right.

    more humane,

Instead of tearing the fetus limb from limb, or sucking them out etc. why not wait till they are born, give them a high dose of a sedative. Baby passes out, baby stops breathing, baby dies painlessly.

    cost-effective,

Abortions cost a lot, especially in these reccesionary times the money could be put to much greater use elsewhere.

    and going to happen anyway

Up untill very recently infanticide was commonplace in all cultures. It still is in many cultures, however in western cultures (despite the fact that abortion has largely replaced it) it still happens from time to time (for some reason flushing them down the toilet seems common). Usually this is done in cases of accidental pregnancy, but in ancient sparta they went one step further and deliberately killed all weak babies, thus improving the genetic quality of their society.

I'd like to hear other people's opinions on this (particularly fellow pro-choicers).
