    Hi all,

I got me one of these.....

    0.jpg

Not in this good a condition but good enough for me. Anyway I'm putting a pair of drops on it and using it as my winter trainer hack.

I have never done this before and want some advise on changing the bars. The bars and stem are all one 'unit', what do I need to get to swap these bars for drops? I thought I could just rip the bars off the stem and just replace the bars but no can do...
This may seem like a basic question but I was looking at it last night and said I'd post up here....I am trying:o

    Thanks in advance

You'll have to get a quill stem, e-bay would be your best bet i'd say. Or you could try one of these, might be ideal for you if you have a threadless stem lying around.

all-in-one, used to call them quill stems in my day

if you want to go the aheadset rout you'll need something like this

plus stem and bars (and brifters, which you cant use unless your changing all the gearing) you could mount the thumb shifter somewhere on your bars i guess, hmm opening a bit of a can of worms there i think

Sweet, I'll have to get a stem but I dont mind... I had images if having to change the fork bth so this is good news.

Are they one size fits all or what measurement do I need to take?

The gears are on the down tube and thats where they'll stay. Shes a beaut of a bike so I'm only changing what I must but the bars are just not what I'm looking for so the drops are going on. She has a back rack which I'll be taking off but the metal pie plate will be staying on:)

They aren't quite 1 size fits all .... You need to check both the handlebar and fork sizes match the stem as there are some variations. The stem can be for 1" or 1 1/8" forks (yours is 1") and for 25.4mm / 26.0mm handle bars.

Most of the stuff you will find on ebay is for 1" forks, some 25.4mm 'JIS' and some regular 26.0mm. I'm lead to believe that the difference matters.
