Back tooth decaying

I have my first dental appointment this week after, ashamedly, around 6 years of avoiding one. The last time I went the dentist was quite condescending and I just didn't have a good experience. I havin't had any pain or problems until recently.

I've been having pains from one of my back bottom teeth for about 2 months. Usually at night time. I finally looked at where the pain was coming from in the mirror. It looks as though one of my back teeth is decaying from the side. The tooth looks like there is a perfect round circle where the enamel should be and then there is a grey/blackish matter. The top of the tooth looks fine. I'm disappointed because I made a point about making sure my back teeth were well brushed. I was just wondering is it normal for decaying to start at the side of the tooth? Would it have been possible that the tooth was chipped and then decay set in? I always thought decaying, in the back teeth, would normally start on top and work its way down?

decay very often starts at the side as you have described, esp in people who have a habit of sucking mints.
