It could just need a new hard drive, is it detecting the drive at all?

On the POST screen does it mention a hard drive or even in the Bios?

It could solve the problem, but I can't say 100% that I will.
Best thing to do is get hold of another drive and give it a try with that. Then if that works buy a new drive.

Best to check that it is not appearing in the Bios first, you will need to press F9 or F2 or some other key to get into it. Then go to the Hard drive section and see what drives it has detected.

As I don't have an Acer I can only give you a general idea of it's location.

Look for a tab or anything that says hard drive/HDD and have a look in their. If the drive is being dtected it will give the name, model and size of the drive, otherwise it will be blank.

I can't be of much help, but google the Acer model number and how to find hard drive information in the bios and that should answer the question.
