So, why is Sir Ernest Shackleton British according to the Indo?

Drilling in Antarctica - for whisky

    Monday November 16 2009

Drilling Antarctica's ice is part of climate change science, but a team of New Zealanders has been asked to drill on the frozen continent for vintage Scotch whisky.
The drillers will be trying to free bottles from two crates of McKinlay and Co whisky shipped to the Antarctic by British polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton as part of his abandoned 1909 expedition.
Whyte & Mackay, the drinks group that now owns McKinlay and Co, has asked for a sample of the 100-year-old scotch for a series of experiments.
Workers from New Zealand's Antarctic Heritage Trust will use special drills to reach the crates, caught in Antarctic ice under the Nimrod Expedition hut near Cape Royds on the frozen continent.

He was technically british considering the year mentioned, although its more likely lazy journalism, it sounds like the article is maybe written originally with the Scottish or New Zealander readership in mind and the Indo just copy and pasted.

Yeah also I think even though he was born in Ireland (which would have been the UK back then anyway) and spent a few years of his early childhood here, he moved to England at quite a young age and spent most of his formative years there.
