Hello folks! The last few days I've really been thinking about buying the Ps3 slim. I have a xbox currently which Im sick of it tbh (will be keeping it tho).
How do they compare up to eachother?

My biggest concern is reliability, are they generally well built to last medium to heavy gaming? (also, what kinda warrenty is with the PS3?)

I have a wireless modem so that means I can connect straight away to PSN? (Any charges?)

I think thats all for now, thanks in advance.

Welcome to Playstation. I don't have and never did own an XBox but from what I hear, PS3's are much more reliable. More so the PS3 Slim. Sony redesigned the internals to improve air flow [less overheating]. PS3 is soooooooooo much quieter than the XBox too, so I hear.

No charges other than your internet connection and items you want to purchase on the store or Home [*shudder*]. There are currently no charges at all, other than the price of the game to purchase, to play on line. Regardless of the scaremongering you may here on the interwebs [and now on PSN friend lists [*shudder again*]] Sony have not said that they have any ideas about charging for online gaming.

More than welcome. Get a 500GB drive for your new Slim. It will thank you.

    No chares.
No extra's needed.PS3 comes with everything you will need bar a headset.(any Bluethooth headset will work)
    No pesky batteries for controlers.
More reliability(None of my Xbox friends still have their original Console)
You have made the right decision.
    Welcome to PlayStation!

Thanks guys! Now to hit the shops looking for the best package and look for Valkyria Chronicles too lol!

It's probably worth buying one now, some decent exclusives finally. I'd recommend Valkyria Chronicles and Uncharted 2 but you should also import Demons Souls from america, it's probably the best game this year. You are still probably better off getting 3rd party games on the 360, they turn out slightly better and the controller is much nicer than the PS one.

Congrats OP, you'll have the best of both worlds.

The PS3 really is a fantastic machine. It has everything you need straight out of the box. No wireless adapter has to be bought, no batteries are needed for the controller(s). You can easily and with Sonys blessing change the hard drive to a bigger unit. It's a brilliant unit for media playback and streaming. I'd highly recommend you download this program which allows you to stream content from your computer.

As mentioned Sony do not charge you for playing on the PSN. Just setup an account and you're good to go.

Yes. Both from the original disks and if purchased and downloaded from PSN. Just don't expect to play ANY PS22 titles [not mentioning any rumuors to be safe]

Sadly not, unless you have a launch 60GB which are selling ebay for around the 250 mark.

You can download FF7 off the US Playstation store! Only a fiver or somewhat i think.

Negative. Mis-information and I'm sure not intentional.
You are talking about PS2 games, which there is no support for. All PS3's can play PS1 games.

Wowzers! Twas not intentional, i just assumed if it couldn't play PS2 games it couldn't play ps1 games

Go for it OP. I did. PS3 n00bie here. Picked up a 120gig slim with MW2 at the weekend.

I called to friend and played MW2 for 10 mins last week and was hooked so I had to have it! I have not owned a gaming console since the PS1

I read plenty of reviews about the xbox's red ring and the noise that put me off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,128 ✭✭✭thorbarry

Hey OP, you should also check out to see if there are any deals on the 80gb model. I bought the 80gb model a week after the slim was released, and i got a sweet deal :)

Also i would recommend only buying only one controller with if you buy it in Game/ gamestop. You can pick up controllers for €45 in HMV as opposed to €60 in most other shops

Got a new 120gb yetserday with MW2 for 299. My old 60gb had packed up about 2weeks ago and didnt want to wait for one coming form the internet so walked into a shop in parted with my cash, there was other bundles but MW2 is the only game I would be interested in thats currently out that I dont already own.

Don't let that put you off. The Xbox has some quality exclusive games, and the warranty is 3 years because of the red ring of death

Thats a good point, the PS3 Slim is very, very quiet.

I don't know what the hardware failure rates are for the PS3 Slim but the 'phat' PS3 model had about 10% compared to 54% failures with the 360.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,134 ✭✭✭✭maquiladora

OP, if you have a HD ready TV, did you get a HDMI cable for your PS3? Cause if you are not playing games in high def then you are really losing out.

The Warranty is up to 6 years because of the Irish Government

you can get them for €300 somewhere. i saw an for them yesterday

I've seen some posts on AV Forums about the PS3 being noisy on XMB which nearly put me off. They must have super hearing on that forum cos I can't hear a whisper coming out of my new slim when watching videos or playing games off the HD. My xbox has some great games but it gives me a headache after 30 minutes (and that's when the game is played off the HD)

The PS3 can be a noisy bugger when the room is warm and the fans kick into gear, much noiser than the 360 when the game is installed to HD. Normally the PS3 is a little quieter than the 360 with a game installed. Running from disk drive on the 360 can be very noticable during quiet moments in games.

Ive had more problems with my 120 gb slim freezing than my 60gb original PS3.

I didn't think PS1 games worked at all but maybe they do if you can find any now a days other than downloading them from PSN.

Dont Buy one , Dont do it .....

You will find yourself sitting in front of it for hours on end , your social life will suffer , you will then discover the on line gaming world (then ur finished) before long you will have a funny on line name like "billybigballs" or something , you will loose all sense of reality and mankind .
Your addiction will even make you think complete strangers (who you have never known or met before) are your best mates , and they too will have funny names .
You will look forward to drinking beers and gaming and not going out , your other half (if applicable) will think you have turned into a complete geek , and will never get her head around why you curse at a TV screen , she will also never understand why you now love your black beauty more than her , and dont push her "buttons" anymore.

But all in all its great craic

So be warned dont do it ...LOL

It can be hit and miss, I tried my copy of FFVIII in my PS3 and got a blank screen for both discs 1 and 2, but both worked perfectly on my PS2 with no slowdown/ glitches/ freezing so not the discs :(.

As for the OP, check the exclusives on the PS3 and see if theres enough there to warrant a purchase. You already mentioned Valkyria Chronicles so you have a good taste in games (its the game that made me buy mine :D ). If theres not, than no point with a PS3 as any cross-platform games can be got on the 360.

    Need some advice/info guys.

Considering either the xbox or ps3 as a santa pressie to...myself!

If you had the choice of either one and only one which one would you choose?
    Playability/gaming wise which is best?
    Durability?
Is it worth going all out and getting the blu-ray facility with the ps3?
Obviously price is a factor, would it be better to buy seperate blu-ray?

    Any comments gratefully received!
    De-Daw :)

PS3, great exclusives and free online!

    Playability/gaming wise which is best?

Basically the same! Multi-platform games may be a bit better on the 360, but the PS3's exclusives put the 360 to shame. Dislaimer: IMO.

    Durability?

50% of 360's get the Red ring of death compared to 10% of PS3s.

Is it worth going all out and getting the blu-ray facility with the ps3?

All PS3's have a built in blu-ray, the games themselves are blu-ray discs

Obviously price is a factor, would it be better to buy seperate blu-ray?

The PS3's blu-ray player is still one of the best on the market, it may be over shadowed by the more expensive one's, but for what your paying it's brill!

    Any comments gratefully received!

blu ray is standard on the ps3. unless you know anyone that plays on the 360 and you want to play together theres no other reason to buy one over the other.

the ps3 is the best value by far though because everything you need is in there ready to go. :)

    Hi Folks,

Sorry to jump on this thread, but I thought it would be the most useful place to suss out my question.

I'm thinking of getting the OH a PS3 for Xmas. He's into his gadgets and loves movies so the Blu-Ray Player feature would be great.

Thing is I think he might be a tad old for this and I secretly worry that like a previous poster suggested, he'd get addicted and spend all his spare time on the PS3. BTW he's in his late thirties. What do you reckon will I treat him or will I buy him the pipe and slippers and a DVD of Reeling in the Years?

unless he's played games in the past it'd be a waste of money.

I have heard someone else mention how the xbox controller is nicer....though personally I gotta say I think controllers are a personal preference. There are some games I prefer the xbox controller and there are some games I prefer the ps3. I hate the offset analogue sticks on the xbox controller, but I hate the the position of the shoulder buttons on the ps3 controller.
