Question regarding Strikes

    Could I have your opinion on the scenario

    Person is a member of a union
    Union votes to strike on a particular day
    Person voted no and does not agree with the strike.
    Person puts in for a days leave on the day of the strike
    Do they get paid as they were on leave and not on strike

    Any help appreciated

    Edit - I misread the question. They will get paid (if the leave was approved), but might be expelled from the union.

    If its in the Public Sector- and you're talking about the proposed strike on the 24th- the guidance which has issued from the Department of Finance to all personnel officers, and communicated to line managers, is no leave is to be authorised for the day- and if someone is on sick leave, irrespective of whether its for a single day or otherwise- it must be certified.

    It is *not* the case that you can put in for a day's leave, and expect to be paid (unfortunately).

    I do think that the unions have a lot to answer for- as they are going against the wishes of substantial numbers of their members.

    I know- I was just emphasising the point.

    It also looks like a number of facilities/locations are going to be closed- so regardless of whether you intend to come in or not- you'll still end up getting docked a days pay.......

    It suits the Department of Finance in one respect- think of all the money they save by not paying salaries........

    The unions have a secret ballot on a strike. Majority wins. What is the point of being in a union if individuals are going to frustrate the goals of the majority. If someone wants to be paid they should report for duty or if their facility is being closed they should make it known in advance to their superiors that they are available for work. Taking a days leave on the day of the strike is trying to have your cake and eat it. When this happened before people were4 allowed to take leave. Tjis time people who want the days pay have to turn up. Finance are obviously hoping that a number of people will turn up and be expelled from the unions. That will make it easier to push their agenda if they can weaken the unions. The banks were very surprised at how well they managed during the last bank strike with only half of their staff. Finance might be hoping for something similar.

    Op, I suggest you resign your union membership.

    They obviously do not share your views on current matters.
