    Hi all,

My friend has O2 broadband (dongle) on his notebook (laptop).

He has a internet radio and wants to set it up.

However, a guy from PC World said he would have to have a landline boradband (i.e Eircom) in order for it to work.

Another guy from Peats told him he would need a router possibly with a booster.

Can anyone give me the low down on what is true or not?

Also I think his BB has a usage of 15GB per month before he gets charged extra.

Would internet radio use alot of this?

    Thanks in advance.

He would need a means to share the broadband so possibly a 3G router is what he'd need. If he streams alot of the time for hours on end it will eat into his cap quite a bit.

He may be able to share his MIDband internet connection with the radio by utilising his Laptop's wireless facility.

It depends on whether he can set up his wireless connection to operate in this fashion or not.

What quality radio channels is he listening to? Regular streaming Internet radio (2FM, TodayFM, etc) are fairly low quality. 8 hours would be about 200MB or so.

Best way to do this is with a router that supports the 3G modem. Internet connection sharing from a computer might work, or it might not.

I think its a very basic laptop so not sure if this could be done

Yep he doesn't mind getting a router once he is sure it will work with the 02 broadband. I can't really understand why the guy in PC World told him he would need a landline broadband! So you think once he's get a router he should be fine?

Hmnn not meaning to sound smart but he was most likely illinformed.

Edimax and other companies produce 3G routers specificallyto share a 3G dongle:

One of these should be all he needs if he can't share the connection from his laptop.

I would just like to add that the internet stations I usually listen to stream at 128K (which is I think about twice the previous example) ...... so he should do some maths to see how much he might use of his allowance so he does not get hit with some huge bill at month's end. To be conservative I would plan for about 60MB per hour for the radio, until he is sure he is using less.

If he gets a router his 3G dongle will plug into that ....... so his Laptop will connect to the router and not use the dongle in that set up. Just something he needs to be aware of ;)

Make sure that the router has firmware for the version of dongle he has ..... most likely it will be OK but it is worth the time to be sure.

    regards.
