There are now two serious disruptions to services on the Dublin-Rosslare railway line which were caused by the recent heavy rainfall:

    1) An embankment subsidence south of Arklow has closed the line between Arklow and Gorey - this may take a week to repair.

    2) A serious landslide south of Wicklow station derailed the empty railcar as it headed south to Arklow - services are now suspended between Wicklow and Gorey as a result.

didn't this also happen earlier in the year (at the same time as the Bray Head rockfall)?

That was at a different location between Arklow and Gorey.

    16th November 10.20hrs

DART services are currently suspended between Dun Laoghaire and Bray due to flooding on the line at Sandycove.

Dublin Bus will accept rail tickets.

    Further Update from Irish Rail:

Interesting that no mention is made of the serious landslide this morning south of Wicklow station that caused a railcar to be seriously derailed, although remaining upright.

    UPDATE 16th November 2009 - 10.30hrs

The line between Arklow and Gorey is currently closed, due to instability of an embankment at the railway line. This follows extremely heavy rainfall over recent days.

It is estimated that the line will remain closed until Monday 30th November, while the embankment is strengthened.

Bus transfers are in operation for rail services between Wicklow and Gorey as a result.

Iarnród Éireann apologises for the inconvenience caused.

There is a knock on effect of this also, as the passengers at Wicklow and further north are at the mercy of those buses arriving on time, resulting in the train being delayed, as was the 7:33 service this morning.

I was coming in on the dart this morning and the water on that section was almost up to the top of the rails - the train crawled through. It always floods there when there's persistent heavy rain.

Its true, it always floods there after any significant rainfall, why haven't they sorted this out, or are they taking a fingers crossed approach ?:)

Finally the company acknowledge that there was a serious landslide, although no mention of the derailment.....
