Need this for Irish insurance purposes, anyone got any experience with reputable jewellers? How much should we pay for this valuation service? Does it significantly effect the cost of house contents insurance?

    Many thanks.

Look up and ring O'Reily's Auction Rooms on Francis Street and they'll be able to give you a valuation.

We purchased our engagement ring from Voltaire Diamonds and the gentleman there gave us an Insurance Valuation from Irish Jewellery Valuation Services, their website is www.irishvaluations.com

The report was very comprehensive and the insurance company seemed to know the company also.

Going by your previous posts, you really seem to like these Voltaire Diamond people, do you work for them by any chance?

Don't know that voltaire guy but I used Irish Jewellery Valuations. Good service and he came to my house to do it. Nice and easy.

Hey I have made e-mail contact with David, the chap in Dublin, Irish Valuations.

Seems to have a fixed fee of €150 and will value up to 5 items for that price. I shall let you know how we get on. Many thanks to all your replies.

An insurance valuation can be got from any reputable jeweller. So long as it's on headed paper, lists the type and carat of metal and stones, is in euro you should be ok. Your insurer may already cover small (1 or 2k) jewellery for all risks as part of your contents, and may require photos for very pricey items, check with them first.

Thanks for the info Nanunanu, most helpful. There are a few jewellers in powerscourt from memory. It is the one on the ground floor, a place that sells newer stock as opposed to an older sytle antique jewellers? Sorry I don't know the names of these stores (I am normally wandering around not paying much attention to jewellers, until now... :-)

    Hi,

I would highly reccoment Vincent (Vinny) O'Neill who runs a shop on Unit C5A, South Anne Street. He is a goldsmith and charges a reasonable amount for valuations.

there is a guy in Roscommon - Padraic Lavin, who does valuations.. He is a Gemologist & a registered valuer. Found him great to deal with - very professional - everything photographed & documented in a special folder - Couldn't find many places that photographed items & with my ring being very unusual its great to have the photos incase i ever lost it & had to get it re-made...contact him on: 087 2393198

Sorry, I,m not sure where you are based. I would suggest Keanes in Cork or Applebys in Dublin. Jewellery does tend to add a good bit to House Insurance.

My Dad bought my mother a couple of pretty expensive bits and I know it is costing them €250 extra a year.

Amazing number of people with low post counts here who have strong opinions on which jeweller you should go to.....

    I'll reiterate my previous statement:
Any jeweller/goldsmith can do a valuation.
So long as the valuation is from a reputable source (ie not your uncle tony who did it as a favour), and explains in detail why the final figure has been reached, your insurer will most likely accept it.

I myself have used Padraic Lavin in Ballaghaderreen Co.Roscommon for my jewellery valuations and found him excellent i also found his website www.jewelleryvaluationsireland.ie and found it informative professional and easy to use i disagree with ur comment (slutmonkey) however that people with low post counts dont know what they're talking about the may be simply new users and as they good word spreads fast :cool::cool:

Yeah - multiple users with 2 or 3 posts all hawking the same website - what could possibly be suspicious?

If you are in Dublin the only place to go is Martin Gear's on Dorset St. I heard about him on Weddingsonline.ie. I recently got engaged and got my ring made so wanted to get an independent valuation. Tried Weirs and a couple of places in town and got mad quotes something like E150 + % of the value of the ring. Think Martin did it for E20/30.

we are trying to get our ring valued for insurance purposes. we have gone into 2 jewellers (in cork area) and in both cases were told that the ring would need to be kept for a number of days (3-4 in one place and 7 in another). is this normal to keep it for this long?

how much should a valuation cost? also, has anyone any recommendations for somewhere in cork for a valuation?

You could try Padraic Lavin. His websites http://www.jewelleryvaluationsireland.ie/. He's in Roscommon but theres a list on his website of jewellers he does work for. If you come up to Dublin theres http://www.jewelleryvalued.com who does valuations on the spot every wednesday.

    I recommend David Dupuy

    www.irishvaluations.com

Based in Dublin, very nice and flat fee for detailed appraisal report

I think it might depend on the ring??

I bought a Tiffany Diamond ring abroad and have the receipt for it. However I wanted a valuation of how much it would cost to replace it in Dublin should it ever get lost in Ireland. Nobody would value it. I went to Weirs, and they sent me to lots of Jewellers around Grafton st./Powerscourt area and nobody would value the ring!!!

Its crazy. So that one bad thing about buying diamond rings abroad. Plus even if you did pay €150 for a valuation, thats crazy money on top of what the ring cost, as well as going to get insurance for it.

We used ESL in Powerscourt shopping centre and they were brilliant.

Flat fee, think it was about €80 and only took 5mins. We gave them ring and GIA cert which had all the specs so they all they have to do is match the ring to the cert, and then base valuation on that. Received letter in post a few days later.

They gave it a clean etc and were very friendly - couldn't recommend them enough.

I believe http://irishvaluations.com/, on Mount St., Dublin 2, who we used, and http://www.dublinjewelleryvaluations.ie/ in Royal Hibernian way, off Dawson St.,will value anything you bring them.

High Street jewellers may not as they may not be qualified to do so and most are sales people, and/or may be reluctant to confirm how much more you can get abroad for the same money (that's if you bought abroad).

I think possibly any saving that could be made by buying in US, would be eaten up by paying for the Tiffany name if buying there, and you wouldn't get the same value as elsewhere, say Haniken or the likes. If paying anything over a couple of thousand, the amount saved on buying here will more than cover the cost of appraisal.

If spending a more, it could well cover the cost of the trip too!

I think €100 is worth it to know you insure for the right local replacement value if getting all risks insurance on something over the valuation threshold. No point spending it on something you spent a smaller amount on.

Tried Weirs and a couple of places in town and got mad quotes something like E150 + % of the value of the ring.

That sort of crap boils my blood... a % of the value of the ring. If they come up with schemes like that I wouldn't trust their valuation.

We bought an engagement ring in Antwerp and had to get it valued in Ireland for insurance. We got it done in Ryan's in Limerick City. It cost €110, but this can be higher or lower depending on the value of the ring, i think the minimum fee was around €50. A percentage of value of ring is added. You have to give them your certs etc and it took a day. We put the ring against on house insurance and it only cost €60.00 a year.
