Ok, i have a Driver lined up to drive one of my artic trucks but im not so sure about his licence. He has the licence for B,C1,EB and EC1.

Is the EC1 just as good as a EC???
If not how would he get the EC onto his licence?

EC1 is not good enough to drive an Artic.

He would need a full EC. The only way to get this is by sitting his full test again.

would he have to sit the C licence before he could sit the EC?

That I am not sure of. I think he would have to.

I'll send this over to the Learning to Drive forum, you'll get the right answer there.

I would guess yes because an EC is a rigid with a trailer attached, hence artic.

To go from EC1 to EC
He will need to sit the C test and then the EC test.

    Regards

Does he need to apply for a provisional C licence or is it ok because he has the c1?

C1 is smaller class of vehicle so he would have to apply for a provisional in the C Category.

An EC1 is a heavy van or small rigid truck with trailer. Basically what is known as a 7 tonner with trailer.

It is not adequate for a standard full size artic.

If the truck is under 7.5 tonnes GVW and the combination of truck and trailer is less than 12 tonnes, EC1 will cover him. Otherwise he'll have to get a C Learner Permit, sit the C test, get a C Licence and EC Permit, then sit the EC test and get an EC Licence. He most likely wont need a new Medical Report, but it's possible if the one he submitted for the C1 and/or EC1 licence is out of date. He'll probably need a new theory test though, depending on how long ago his EC1 Learner Permit expired.

And that's assuming he's got acquired CPC rights!

thanks for all the comments people. now i understand the licence cat.
TBH iv had drivers with only the c1 licence driveing a 18tonne truck.
often got stoped by the garda and they never actually noticed. just goes to show what they know.

I've been saying it around here for years - the average Garda has very limited knowledge of aspects of the driving licencing system outside of category B.

Not sure if this will help but in some cases for smaller trucks a normal car licence will do (under 3.5 tonnes GVW) Just picked it out of this article here..
