There is nothing to it really.
If you are just putting in a new HDD and not looking to backup the your user, gamesaves, etc.. then just remove the original one and install the new one in its place.

If you do want the retain all this data, you need to connect up an external USB HDD which must have a FAT32 partition to the PS3 and perform a system backup, which is in system settings.

Once you install the new HDD, you then go to system backup again and perform a restore.

There are loads of YouTube vids on it. Just watch out thouhgh because the tray that holds the HD is a bit diffrent on the 80gig from previous models. It is easier to get out though. And, as everyone will tell you, use the correct sized screwdriver! Backing up and restoring will take a while but it's worth it for 500gig or a terabyte of storage. Good luck!

Indeed. I've changed my HDD about three times now, first two went fine cos one of the guys I lived with had a proper tool kit.

He left and the third time I completely sheered one of the screws on the slim and now I need to get a needle nose pliers to get it out.

Why do they have to put them in so tight??

is there any advantage other than extra space? some people reckon it makes loading faster, is that right?

    No advantage like faster loading.

The HDD on the PS3 runs at 5400rpm. Putting in a faster 7200rpm drive won't make a difference as it still runs it at 5400.

If you still have your playstation booklet, sony give you a guide to replacing the hdd inside, very straightforward but as said above make sure you have the correct screwdriver
