How to increase laptop speed?

I have a 2/3 year old acer laptop, its running very slow and i need it to run autocad, which would be near impossible, there is good memory left but its just really slow. I have deleted programmes but the bare essentials, and have no images, videos, or music on the laptop, is it possible to increase the speed without forking out money? and if not would i be better to just buy a new laptop.

And how much ram would be needed to run a programme like autocad comfortably?

I would appreciate any help, anyone has to offer, thanks :D

Is the laptop well optimised? I.e. Is it defragmented, No spyware or viruses whatsoever? If it is then whats the specs of the laptop?

For Autocad you would need atleast 3GB for smooth sailing, 4Gb would be best but you would need a 64 Bit OS. Does your laptop have a discrete graphics card, that is essential for good performance in Autocad.

Basically whats the specs, ram may not be your problem.

It might be worth lashing out on a bigger hard drive. There are various 500gb drives around now (of varying specs), and a 1TB drive by Western Digital, the only problem with the latter, being that it's 12.5 mm thick, instead of the usual 9.5mm. WD do a 640GB drive as well.

I thought about expanding my own drive from a 320 to a 500 but then I realized I would have no way to ghost the disk or anything, and yeah. Id have to wait until I was ready to buy windows7 Retail

unless she has limited space, then a new hard drive would be relatively pointless. No need spending money on it just for the sake of it, better of buying new ram.

Single best way to improve proformance on the cheap = ram.

I've always noticed a more substantial increase in performance with a bigger hard drive than increasing the ram. It may cost more, but I like a lot of space to play with.:P
