Nice! That R107 Merc was a pretty unusual sight, anyone care to shed more light on it?

I'm guessing that it was a Lancia Stratos.

Last car looks like a Ferrari 308 GT4 . Didn't someone from the north have a 308 GTB or 328 GTB as a rally car in the 80's or early 90's? Seem to remember seeing one on the box once.

last car is a DeTomaso Pantera. Very unusual as a rally car, but essentially a big Ford V8.

The Merc is curiously enough an "SL" and not an SLC. Mercedes did rally their 107's in the seventies, with a 450SLC, fitted with a tuned 5 litre engine. As usual they had to produce their 500 units to homologate, so the 450 SLC 5.0 is a very rare and very desireable car nowadays!!

Yep, PaulK, that is a De Tomaso, well spotted.

Don't know anything about R107 rally cars, W107s were used a lot, 1979 and 1980 as Mercedes works cars, thereafter as private rally cars. Seems that in the 1980 Safari rally Mercedews flew helicopters alongside some of their cars to read the data being relayed from various sensors in the car, therfore being the first to try this. The cars were sometimes barely modified from road cars on the interior at least, some, if not all had automatic, wood interior and air con.

And I remember they had to drive those mercs with the the interior heaters on full blast to help keep the engines cool even in the dessert.

anorak mode on :D The W107 is the group name for all the SL/SLC's, distinguishing between Coupe's and Convertible by: R107 for the 'roadster' SL's and the C107 for the Coupe SL's... ;)
