    r u jokin mate.
You could always write to Jimlfixit, you play off four and don't know the rules
I play off 5,probably playing to about 8 but there's not a lot i can do only try to improve
I beleive if there was a medical reason you can get a new hcp but only in extreme cases, lost arm etc

Btw i reckon you're taking the Mick

Yeah, you should have no worries. I'm going to do the same thing. Playing to a low handicap is just too much hard work these days. I'm only able to play 6 times a week just now so i'm going to ask if i can play off 15 for the next 5-6 years until my kids have grown up and i have some time to get out a bit more often.

no iam for real, i could probably play to it with 6 months hard training but i don't have the time

Give us some more information, your background.......how long you've been playing for etc...I'm interested for all the wrong reasons.

A few nasty replies there, boys. OP, you haven't a hope of getting an increase. (And you don't sound like a regular Category 1 golfer with an enquiry like that). I was handicap secretary in my club a few years ago and Category 1 golfers are treated in a totally different fashion to mere mortal golfers by the G.U.I. You can't be cut into Category 1, even if you've had a number of notable scores in fourballs etc., unless the Handicap Sec. pushes the point hard whereas Category 2, 3 and 4 players have to be nailed automatically! And the opposite also applies, so, do what the cute hoors in my club do-6 putt the 18th green to get your 0.1 back! And keep doing it. But remember, that's cheating..............

The maximum shots you can get back in a year is 2, so it would take a while to get out.

No they weren't nasty. How can someone who plays off 4 ask a question like that and expect a serious answer?

I have two small kids and a busy job, I think I will ask to play off 9 too. Actually I have a bit of a wrist injury so I may settle for 12.

I think the latter part of his username is pretty spot on!

he deserves to be lashed for using the word 'dudes' on the golf forum anyway
re;the different category's,i'm treated the same as any player in the club, have been down to 3 couple of years ago,i was cut for winning 2 fourballs when i was off 4,any club that's treats the lower players differently are cheating so those players can still play in their intermediate team for interclub's
it does go on a fair bit,do you agree?

I agree with that. I find the original post odd as any single figure handicapper i've ever known wants to go as low and stay as low as they possibly can. Getting shots back (and even staying still) makes me sick!

Interesting you say about getting cut on performance though heavyballs. I was having a conversation with a guy today who said it's rare that they can do it for under 5 handicappers because the GUI are very reluctant to allow it.

if your talking about just observation yes it's very rare but the fact that i won 2 fourballs within a month i was cut exactly1 shot,so it's slightly different that say getting cut during the winter for winning 3 turkeys or shooting mad scores in a 12 hole comp consistantly
i think it all depends on the club but they are well within their rights to do it as i 'm sure you know

Guys i was like you a one time but now i much rather have an intangible 4 handicap, i have leinster medals in my back pocket, junior cup, senior cup caps etc, but i rather play for fun and a chance of winning a prize instead of just trying to shoot standard scratch with my current form and future form

Yeah it does go on a fair bit. I hate that kind of carry on! But I did find that the G.U.I. are slow to give general play cuts to Category 1 players when details of notable performances are submitted to them.

what a load of bs,if you had all those medals why is it you have hardly contributed to any golf posts although you've been on boards a good while,
anyway you would not have asked such a stupid question if the above was correct,
i still say you're a piss taker and this thread should be closed

I don't understand your thinking D.R. Cowboy. I'd love to say I play off 4 even though I know in my heart that I'll never be a single figure player no matter how many lessons, rounds or prayers... It must have taken a lot of commitment to get to 4 and something to be proud of. Natural progression of age will bring you out.
P.S. I didn't know that the GUI could influence a members handicap at club level - thought the HC Sec/Committee within CONGU rules had sole responsibility? JTOL

In fairness everyone there is one serious and non slagging answer to the OP's question.

If you play off 4.0 now it will take you exactly 45 rounds of golf to get out to 8.5 and therefore play off 9. With a 2.0 limit per year that will mean 20 rounds next year, 20 the year after and 5 more after that, so you'll be off 9 around 6pm on 29th March 2013.

Mind you I imagine you'll want to play off 15 by then so you should reach your goal sometime late in 2016. Nothing like aiming high I must say.

I would strongly suggest taking up a different sport if that's your attitude to your golf game. Maybe U12 football? Or since you like the ladies so much what about ladies golf? My club has just 4 women members so you should have a fair chance at "winning a prize instead of just trying to shoot standard scratch".

If I could remove every golfer from the planet who's only goal is to win competitions and get free stuff I think the world would be a better place. We have a name for them - bandits.

The thread was interesting in a "like watching a car crash in slow motion" kind of way.... this post though has tipped it over into la-la land.
