A folder turned into a file

My Friends usb Stick has had a folder turned into a file of the same name. Does anyone know what can cause this ? I opened a copy of the fodler in notepad and it looks like some of the file titles form the folder are there which makes me hopefull that the info can be recovered. Going to try a fo;e recovery tool now. Dose…
