Light trouble

My main beams stopped working on the way home last night in the pouring rain. I had only dipped beams for a 70 mile journey of bad country roads and if I cannot fix them today Monday morning and evening will be more of the same. I think its the stalk (switch) thats the problem because when I pull back towards myself on it, as when I flash the lights they work but when pushed foward for normal use I have nothing only side lights. The main dealers are closed today and I doubt they would have one in stock anyway,I tried a scrapyard this morning but no luck.
I'm hoping now that it may be just a relay that I need. I'm not sure however if the flash would work with a broken relay. Any ideas lads? Its a Landrover Defender.

The flasher headlights might be on a different fuse.

I had this years ago with an Audi, turned out to be the stalk.

Yes it could well be the relay also, if thats ok then it probably is the stalk.

Yeah its happened me 2 years ago with an astra also needed a new stalk, cost me about 30 euro and I fitted it in 15 minutes . This time I except to have to wait at least a week for the part from Landrover and I'v just found one on ebay for 56 sterling  . Is there no chance it might be the relay I'd have to buy one to find out for sure.

Well it is the stalk thats broke but I've done a temporary fix. I just hope it lasts long enough until I get the new one. Thanks for the replies.

You could just wire in a switch & mount it on the dash to turn on the full beams. You can buy a selection of switches in maplin for around €2.50. I did this for my fog lights when the switch broke, I wasn't paying €35 for a new stalk. Went to maplin, bought an illuminated switch, connected up the 3 wires (check your car's wiring diagram for the correct wires) & wham-bam-thank you maam, all done! Even passed NCT with it.

Yeah thats a good idea. What about the rest of the stuff that the switch is used for(horn and indicators in my case) If its on the way out anyway I'll try to fix it or get a second hand one. I would like to see how you wired that though.
