MITM means man in the middle. I dont think these things exist yet we deprecate crypto protocols all the time because of them :(

Not the best place to discuss such items here.
MITM attack's are of high security nature and somethings are best left unsaid at this juncture.

They usually look right at you and ask you to change your ways.

    Quite devious.

Just say that to your network admin. If he/she has a sense of humour, you'll spend the rest of the week reading upside down web pages and having the 'the porn' inserted in place of 'the' in your emails.

Only if your mouth is full of Hula Hoops while singing it.

Listen to some podcasts from security now, they do exist and can easily be performed on any lan, which includes free WIFI spots, wireless lans etc.
People can spoof the ARP cache and redirect other peoples network traffic to their machine first, before sending it on to the real recipient. So while they're in the middle, they can capture all the traffic including passwords, credit card numbers etc.

And yes... this thread is not for after hours... more computer security.

Unless the "man in the middle" attack is when you're cock blocked by another guy when chatting up a girl.

Ya but does it actually happen in airports and stuff? I mean, the whole thing seems a bit academic really (eve inserts a counterfeit message that has the same hash as the original message and stuff).

Short answer: Yes, all the time.

Edit - You're from Ennis, right? Hot tip, try to avoid connecting to the McDonalds hotspot.

I think I might be breaking some boards rules saying how it can be done, so I won't. I doubt airports are the main areas to worry about though.
Much more likely are hotels, apartment blocks, cafes etc.

Someone could be sitting in the room just recording everything that passes through your browser, and analyse it later. While they're pretending to write a word doc or something.

I wouldnt worry though, unless you are sending anything unencrypted.

Banking sites etc use SSL. Maybe if you are getting mail by POP3, but who does that anymore :p

Yeah your only fooling yourself if you think SSL is secure.
I think people are mad doing personal stuff using free hot-spots.
