Martin Mc Donagh pops up again

I was wondering when he would reappear. He is producer on the new Brendan Gleeson/Don Cheedle movie The Guard according to IMDB.

His brother John Michael mcDonagh is writing and directing, which is interesting, he had a hand in writing the heath ledger version of Ned kelly a few years ago. he also made a short called The Second Death, has anyone seen this or know where to get it?

That's not the way it works, as long as a person has Irish blood and does something noteworthy on the international stage they will be considered Irish by the Irish people.

To add to that, any Irish person who does anything noteworthy becomes British or from the British Isles when reported by English channels and papers.
We've been playing this game for years.

I have a friend who was born while her parents were on holiday in Colombia, she is not Colombian. If McDonagh has two passports having two nationalities, and chooses to go with the Irish one, then he is Irish. If he still keeps a British passport, they're welcome to claim him too. But like the boxer John Duddy, in this instance it's McDonagh's choice whether he's primarily Irish or British.

It's not his choice. There's a difference with your friend, she was born there but I'm sure she pend at most a week there before she moved back home. McDonagh on the other hand was born in England where his parents had lived for considerable years and where he lived most of his youth. He can't just turn around and say "Oh I'm not English I'm Irish" just because it suits him. My gf was born in America and moved here when she was 4. Her parents are Irish but she is still American. Even though she's lived here and her entire family are Irish to me she's still American.

I tagged this on in reference to the irish match at the weekend, not martin mcdonagh. surprised it was picked up incorrectly.

personnally, I dont care where he's from, his plays and films always have an irish dimension, he is also a seriously creative individual when writing characters, which is why I find him interesting. I wonder if his brother is just as good, has anyone seen his short "THE SECOND DEATH"?

My friend was just an example of how what you said is completely wrong. That passport thing is exactly why he CAN turn around and say "I'm Irish." You think it is YOUR decision? So if he moved back to Ireland at 6 months old, is that OK by you? 18 months? 3 years? You think Ronan O'Gara isn't Irish either?

Your friend is technically Colombian but given that she only spent a few days there it's hard to say. Martin McDoangh spent a large portion of his life in England and given that he was born there makes him English, not Irish.

I can apply for an English passport but that does not make me English. There are far too many people claiming to be Irish simply because they have Irish parents or grandparents. If Ronan O Gara was born in Ireland then he's Irish, if he was born outside of Ireland then he is not Irish. Simple as that.
