i believe that if derry city are not reinstated back into league of ireland then forever the north will be a different country. derry city brided the gap between north and south but if they go back to irish league then a united ireland has never been further away. just my 2 cents

I'm a republican. I believe it's bad that the North aren't being represented in LoI anymore but I think you're reading too much into it

They got kicked for breaking the rules, not because they are "foreign."

The North IS a different country. Having Derry in the LOI or not, makes no difference whatsoever.

The North IS a different country.

The vast majority of candystripe fans would be Irish citizens. They are as Irish as you or me.
Having Derry in the LOI or not, makes no difference whatsoever.

I think you will find it made a massive difference to the people of Derry. It offered them an opportunity to visit other parts of Ireland, and indeed europe, during times of great political turmoil.

    Tis a shame.

It may be a shame, but that's the way it is. The north is the north. Neither Irish, nor British, but uniquely Northern. The sooner the better the majority there realise this & get over this & get on with it, the better for everyone, mostly for them.

There is no such thing as a Northern Irish citizen. There are British and Irish citizens residing in Northern Ireland, but no Northern Irish citizens. Surely those who view themselves as Irish should be allowed enter the League of Ireland?

They're all nordies. Regardless of which passport they hold.

No shortage of Irish fans for Celtic.
Maybe the Derry supporters could pick a different team in the meanwhile?

I haven't the foggiest about football, so I can't pick one for them.
As far as I understand it, they broke the law/regulations, so they had to be punished.

This might be a Sports thread, perhaps? It's not actually Politics.

This must be one of weirdest threads ever started!!! :D
How the issue of a football team from Northern Ireland that plays competitively in the Republic of Ireland...that has now been booted out of their league for breaking the rules...can have an impact on people's perception of national boundaries/borders is beyond me!!!
I haven't laughed so much since John and Edward's Ghostbuster performance last Saturday on X-Factor!!! :D

I seem to recall that Derry City didn't join the League of Ireland until 1985 and at that point it was in division 1 (they got promoted to the premier division a year or two later). The idea of them being readmitted and playing in division 1 is still on the table.

Don't they play any other ball games up there on an all-island basis to bridge the gap between north and south? They should really try out the auld gaelic football or rugby, they're popular down here with some people.

Good, I don't want a united Ireland. I'm happy enough being part of the UK. :)

    Wut?
Have you forgotten about all the Northern Irish fellas who play for the all-ireland rugby team?
There was a protestant called Darren Graham who played gaelic up here and was subjected to sectarian abuse. He had to stop playing due to it.

This is a football discussion, hence not a political discussion. Take your political views elsewhere.

Now I'm not coming in here stomping around like the big bad prod, i'm not looking for a confrontation, I'm just giving "my two cents." I'm happy enough being part of the UK.

This a a total political start to a thread!!!
So if the starter of the thread is allowed to try to make political points with his words then other posters should be entitled to post similar political comments!!!
I personally think the thread should've been put in the comedy section of boards ie (if there is one!!!) after the starter post!!! :D

    I agree.
I don't see how a team that's supported by bitter republicans is bridging any gaps.
Unless the southern irish are saying they don't like northern irish nationalists.
