HP Laptop - Advice on how to fix

Okay, so my brother in law has a few issues with his laptop. Obviously it is out of warranty, and the shop he bought it in have a fixed fee of €299 to fix anything wrong with a laptop... most ridiculous thing I've ever heard... they just want you to buy a new one every time something goes wrong.

So, will try and fix it myself.

The laptop is a HP Pavillion DV9700.

    1) The charger. It seems to be loose when plugged into the laptop and doesn't charge unless you fiddle with it, or hold it down etc. I am hoping it is just an issue with the actual lead and so I can just buy a new one for him.
I took the part number: 432309-009 off the front of it but cant find it online at all. What do I need to make sure of when buying a new power source?

    2) The screen holding is damaged. It's not a major issue...and to be honest I would think he can get by without it as he doesn't bring it anywhere... but I said I would try and fix it for him.

It's cracked at the bottom left. It sort of hangs a bit loose, so doesnt quite sit right all the time. It appears that the bar is cracked or bent as well. Not sure how to describe it to be honest.

I'm just wondering is it a doable diy fix. Can I replace it myself without to much knowledge.... follow instructions if I can find them online. I know a bit about computers and have taken a few apart in my time, but no expert by any means.

Or should I just get on to HP themselves?
    Any help appreciated.....

AC adapter should be an easy find -

    http://www.google.ie/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=+AC+adapter%2BDV9700&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=

Your issue though might not be with the actual adapter but with the AC power jack on the laptop itself which I would think would be an expensive fix.

As regards the screen hinge or chassis damage - this again would be expensive. Not being overly familiar with your model, the hinge could be replace relatively easily but if it's the main chassis that's damaged then you would have to completely strip the laptop.

Some in that range had issues with over-heating that could cause the crack and power related issues, how old is it? Some in that range got extended warranties to cover it.

That was my initial thought as well... but it looks fine. The AC power jack on the other hand is bent out of shape. Hopefully it is just that.

Ya, that's what I was worried about. If the job is big then it's just not worth fixing, either put up with it, or just buy a new laptop.

very interesting... yes, it definitely had problems with overheating. He mentioned that again the other day.

He has no idea how the casing cracked, but assumed it was his young daughter. Perhaps it was something else caused it. I will get on to HP about that so.
    Thanks.

The warranty does not cover this it only covers the wireless not working the gpu not working and anything pretty much to do with the south bridge failing

    okay, thanks.

So basically... if he doesn't want to put up with the broken casing he might as well get a new one. If he can put up with it I'll just get a new power source and hope for the best.

you could always get this http://cgi.ebay.ie/17-Screen-LCD-Display-Hinges-for-HP-Pavilion-DV9000_W0QQitemZ320436209772QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_LaptopAccess_RL?hash=item4a9b7c886c

the plastic should pop back it to place when these are fitted the hinges go on these laptops all the time because of the crap stuff they use to make these laptop's

I would not spend any money on repairing this computer. This laptop has the 8600M nvidia chipset. There seem to be a major overheat issue with this chipset which cause video problems. If you havn't experienced these problems yet, it is only a matter of time.

Looking for an adapter there. There seems to be a huge choice.

The exact model of the laptop is DV9702ea.

What's the difference between this and this.

They both say DV9700 in the title.
The first one is 18.5v and 4.9a and is €18+.
The second one 18.5v and 3.5a and is €7+.
    Can either be used?

What is weird is that even though the second one states DV9700 in the title, when you go down to the models it only goes as far as the DV8000 series... no sign of the DV9700.
This inclines me to spend the extra €10 and get the first one.

Myself and a friend both have this laptop, and both have the issues with the cracking on the lower left of the screen area.

    Really annoying :/
