A welterweight bout between former champ Matt Hughes (43-7 MMA, 16-5 UFC) and PRIDE veteran/probably UFC newcomer Renzo Gracie (13-6-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) is expected to be part of next year's UFC 109 card.

That's according to a report from Jeremy Botter at Heavy.com.

UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta recently posted a message on Twitter stating Gracie could sign with the UFC, and as MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) recently reported, UFC president Dana White said he expects Hughes to return in early 2010, possibly on the Super Bowl weekend card.

However, MMAjunkie.com could not immediately confirm that the Hughes vs. Gracie matchup is close to finalized.

Although not officially announced by the organization, UFC 109 is expected to take place Feb. 6 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and air on pay-per-view. The event serves as the UFC's annual Super Bowl weekend card.

Hughes, who had two legendary title runs at welterweight, recently rebounded from back-to-back losses to Georges St-Pierre and Thiago Alves with a fairly close unanimous-decision win over Matt Serra at UFC 98 in May.

Although the future UFC Hall of Famer openly contemplated retirement in recent years, the 36-year-old has backed off the talk in 2009. However, Hughes is just 2-3 over the past three years, and the victories came over non-contenders Serra and Chris Lytle.

Gracie, meanwhile, hasn't fought since a February 2007 EliteXC event, when he topped Frank Shamrock (though via disqualification) to push his win streak to three fights. The former longtime PRIDE fighter had picked up a pair of victories over Pat Miletich and Carlos Newton in the IFL, where he coached the New York Pitbulls, prior to that win.

The 42-year-old is a member of the famed Gracie family as the son of Robson Gracie and grandson of Carlos Gracie.

So what do you think? This fight should feel like it's gonna be incredible but.... i'm not too sure. I love Renzo, but i'm not too sure what this fight is all about. And if Matt Hughes wins, so what? Hardly means he's back.

I'm confused, but i'll be excited for it all the same (if it comes good)
