Celtic Poker Tour - Portlaoise

    Hi all,

Got a text from Celtic Poker Tour saying they are holding a tournament in the Heritage Hotel in Portlaoise next Sunday. Apparently CPT are under slightly different management. I've played in a couple of CPT events before and thought they were pretty well organised (Apart from a dealer advising me to go all in on the final table when i was short stacked, I was the BB. Admittedly nearly half my chips were in but I had a terrible hand and the way people were busting out I could have finished higher up by the time the blinds came round again. I never want advice from a dealer at that stage, he probably wanted to get finished up as quickly as possible)

My problem is that they used to have €10k guaranteed with an entry of €120 (incl €20 reg). The text I received says the fee of €120 is the same but with only €7k guaranteed. This seems very strange to me, surely if the guarantee has gone down the fees should too. Do they expect people to pay the same fees with less prize money?

    Anyone any thoughts?

    Cuterob,

You indeed make a valid point. While I understand the guarantee coming down due to the recession, what about the poor poker players of Ireland?

The guarantee is reduced, not the the level of costs for the organiser.

If they guaranteed 20K would you pay €40 reg?

As an organiser myself, running an event with a guarantee is a hugh risk to be taking on in favourable economic times never mind during a recession.

TBH I think Liam is sticking his neck out here with the guarantee in portlaoise.

I know Bruce ran a game in the same hotel during the summer with a €5k guarantee and had an overlay of circa €1500 if I remember correctly. In addition to their overlay they had staff costs, room hire, set-up cost, advertising and a food bill which all had to be paid.

They probably were down close on €3k-€4k for a days work and a week advertising the event.

Name one other business / company that you are currently dealing with that are willing to take on such risks?

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for the reply JP. I've played a couple of your tournaments before and thought they were very professional and well organised.

I'm not playing poker too long, the reason i started the thread was to get the opinion of more seasoned players.

All of JP's reply makes sense and it's nice to get a view from the organising side of things.

To be Fair Celtic has been bought By Liam and Fionn who used work with Celtic and this is a big Guarantee for the lads week in week out ,

In the current Climate Guarnateed games are risky now , With the structure change i can see this being a success and i have to commend the lads on the games they are putting on and wish them the best of luck in there new buisiniess venture .. These lads have worked with us alot in the past and i can assure u this will be a success.

    Regards

    Big Slick,

Think the CPT are still operating with one Rebuy or Top Up for €50. (That's what the text says)
