Fixed is dead too apparently. Well, it's been coming, hasn't it... I hope everyone's been hard at work on their survival bunker because we're all fcuked now.

Some people have been expecting this calamity and have been looking for the next fixie, a replacement, a way to stay ahead of the plebs. Weird squishy bikes with big tyres on small wheels and nearly vestigial saddles have been suggested as a replacement*, so, kona, brace yourself for an influx of skinny jean wearing goons in search of the cool.

*some genuinely impressive videos on that link btw.

There is one simple flaw in that prediction of hucking being the next fixed gear....

Its accepted that Freds like shiney things and expensive clothing? I would strech this to expensive Calvin Klein boxers.

They also just pose anjd dont really do much.

I think its safe to say that, due to their style and clothing choice, Hucking could be prohibitivley expensive, They would be struggling to scrape off the skid marks from their e30 boxers after trying to huck something gay like steps or something.

Also they cant argue about the simplicity of a full bounce.

It will come full circle and they will be back on their fold up scooter thinbgs like the girls they are.

29 inch MTBs now theres scope for freds there.

Great deal, pity it's not stocked in the Republic of Ireland, or is it just a ruse?

    Single speed/fixie is dead.

It's now The Dawn Of The Age Of The Quadruple.

Id imagine if you gave them e250 they could get you the bike, cant see why it wouldnt be available here....unless they think the stupid Paddys are so far behind in bikes that we still think a full sus bike for under e100 is good value?.....oh wait:o

    From the Halfords link...

    # Gears: 1-9
    # Number of Gears: 1

Does anyone actually proof read those things?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

That looks like _very_ good value at €250. Very practical commuter, looks like it will take full mudguards and a rack.

If you pedal faster you go faster .. is that not like ... errr ... a gear up?

It's almost cheap enough to be a "keep it outside until it stops working" bike.

    Go on....

You should get one. I already have two in that category, as well as a fixed commuter.

Thinking about it now, it's actually something I'd be looking for. My fixie, while much beloved, has no clearances, bosses or braze ons. A grocery bike with big tyres, rack and mudguards etc is appealing...

When you "add to basket" the price drops to £179.99.

Same on the .ie site, the price drops to €224.99. But no ROI store has the bike available it appears.

Based on what I've said before about the likes of these bikes taking customers away from my micro-capitalist venture, I think the current fixie which I'm building (no. 10 or 11) will probably be the last... I was never mad in it for the money (learned that lesson ages ago!) but I do like to break even on the parts bought, I dont mind too much paying for tools along the way cause I'll use them again.

I cant say I find the bike very appealing, but then again some people think those MTBs from Dunnes with the suspension are amazing. No accounting for taste.

Looks like it has decent components that will continue to work, the key difference between it and a Dunnes full-sus MTB.

Fear not Flickerx, I don't think Halfords presents much competition for your lovingly curated works of art.

    Stone mad.

Tbh, if I had the space and €250 to spare, I'd probably buy one of these for hacking down to the shops/pub/off licence and as a spare commuter...

Not quite, I've only seen one or two in Galway (exluding unicycles!). When something becomes fashionable in Galway, you can be fairly sure its old hat elsewhere.

Don't they still have crusties in Galway?

Yes they(we!) do. I don't want to worry Kona but if you do see one on a bike its usually a battered old Mountain Bike, sometimes with an old shopping basket attached to the back carrier. If cultural diffussion ever goes into reverse...
