5.1 Query

    Chaps,

I have an enquiry from a pun and don't know how to answer it .

    It's for a theatre.

They plan to run a stereo feed to FOH and use the rear pair of the 5.1 to drive a headphone system so blind or partially sighted people can avail of a descriptive commentary.

What sort of software will burn a 5.1 DVD easily and do the above ?

Do the mix and bounce the 6 audio files from PT, Logic or Soundtrack Pro then bring them into "compressor" which is part of Final Cut Studio.
Compressor will encode the 6 signals into a 5.1 DVD. The rear channels will be the headphone mix.
Contact Alessandro from filmbase if this is over your head.
Tell him I put you on to him.

a combination of adobe software most likely will do the job

adobe encore is to author dvds (handles surround sound no problem) - this might be enough depending on what you want to do

adobe premier to actually edit the video and audio footage

if you need to actually record the surround mixes use cubase/adobe audition/whatever then import to premier/encore

if you use audition it integrates very well into the other adobe stuff via adobe bridge!

    Ah right , thanks Michael.

So this will work combining 2 Stereo tracks? There is no 'mix' in this side of the process as the Foh stereo mix is done and the commentary is done , but not combined - and I'd suggest from the enquiry Techy Bods they're not.

Maybe I should suggest farming it out ?

You would need to import the stereo mix and the commentary into your DAW and pan accordingly using the surround panner then export.
You then import the files to compressor and select 5.1 from settings.
I have not personally done this but know it works.
As said above Alessandro would sort you out in a flash

a 5.1 system isn't really set up to play stereo, even from the front two speakers cause the angles are wrong. I don't suppose that will bother the punter too much though.

I reckon this could be doable on iDVD. or imovie. Logic 9 also lets you bounce 5.1 and quad tracks. Reaper lets you bounce down up to 64 afaik.

It's not a 5.1 system , but 2 independent systems - one the stereo FOH mix and the other the headphone commentary ....
