Window Update not working on Vista.

In the last few hours Windows will refuse to update. I have it set to download and install automatically but it keeps giving the same error:

"Code C80001FE Window Update encountered and unknown error."

Googling, the closest I came up with was C80001FE error in windows 2000 was caused by not enough disk space but I have 2.55GB of freespace.

I also found this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958048 but it was of no use.

Ok I was finally able to get update working again. I went to:

C:/Windows

Deleted "SoftwareDistribution"
and renamed "SoftwareDistribution.old" to "SoftwareDistribution".

Its working for now but maybe after this update it might stop again. I'll check back in again with the results.

Yeah just checked update again tonight. Still working so looks like its a long-term fix.

Overheal

.Net framework updates are notorious @ work for not working right. The best solution is to uninstall all current framework programs and start them from scratch again. Similarly, theres as good a chance your failed update was a patch of some description to something other than the kernel. Its a problem that happens when Hotfixes get stacked on top of one another.
