    Father Sinnott released just now,

    for those who care.....
It has been confirmed tonight that Fr Michael Sinnott, an elderly Irish priest held captive by a kidnap gang in the Philippines, has been released

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Sinnott has been freed.

The missionary was abducted from his gated compound in Pagadian City on the island of Mindanao on October 11.

Father Sinnott - A Columban Missionary originally from Wexford was taken hostage by armed gunmen in Pagadian city on October 11th.

The 79 year old - who has a heart condition - appeared in a video pleading for his release almost a fortnight ago.

His kidnappers were demanding $2m (€1.3m) for his release.

It is not yet clear if a ransom was paid.

I also thought it was an angry 'Ffs! Another pervy priest on the loose' thread:(. I read up on him just there, as I began reading I discovered he was being held captive by a group of Milfs and I thought..things mightn't have been too bad....again I realised I was assuming:(.

    Very good news

    It's Father Sinnott btw.

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/1111/sinnottm.html
Fr Michael Sinnott, the Irish priest who was being held hostage by rebels in the Philippines has been released.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin has said that he is personally delighted and relieved that Fr Sinnott has been freed by his captors.

The release of Fr Michael represents a successful conclusion of a major diplomatic effort by the Irish and Philippine governments.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says no ransom was paid by the Irish Government.

Fr Sinnott, a member of the Missionaries of St Columban, was taken captive on 11 October.

He was over there trying to help people, and was kidnapped. That's fucking disgusting

I'd much rather pay 150k to realise a charity worker who has been captured than give just under half that amount to some civil servant as a bonus.

Anyway its good to hear he is free and in good health.

Wasn't a joke - had genuinely no idea wwho he was as I'm not as uptodate with home news as I should be. Apologies.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

    Excellent news for a change.

just waiting for someone to say it's his own fault for putting himself in harms way that he was captured and decrying that a ransom was paid for him too

as much as i detest what members of the Catholic Church have done in this country, at the same time, some of the people i admire the most are people like him who are part of this institution.

That's amazing, great news. When I saw that video of him about two weeks ago, I was gutted. He didn't look well and it made me feel sick to think that somebody could sink so low as to kidnap an elderly man who was guilty of nothing except going out of his way to help others.

I was thinking the same thing, but I really believe that the man is a gracious man and I only wish there were more like him out there.

It would be a ransom I would be willing to contribute to. :)

I'm glad to see this frail, elderly priest has been released. He was doing thankless and dangerous work in an inhospitable part of the world.

Big difference in this case, is that this man is a man of the cloth, and as such any ransom would not be paid by the government but rather the Catholic Church. So it would have no impact on other Irish people abroad or the state coffers. I have nothing but the greatest respect for Fr Sinnot and those like him.

I notice that this has not stirred the media much, but then again, I suppose he is not; female, mildly attractive and upper class. I still stand by everything I said about Sharon Commins.

The MILF taking our priests, wikipedia says this of the MILF
Over the next month, several M.I.L.F. commanders were tagged by government officials as having initiated an offensive campaign.

    what?

are you saying that a ransom - which more than likely there was one - should not have been paid? i put the roll eyes in for people who would prefer that a ransom wasn't paid. Although, as was pointed out to me it's unlikely the government would have been paying it. Even if they did, most Irish people wouldn't be against it for a person who has given his life over to help others.
