Which part of display has failed?

Dell Inspiron 1300 15.4" screen isn't working but an external monitor works okay. Whenever laptop is switched on or when Fn/F8 is used, screen displays on bottom half for a split second.

I understand there are 3 components, the LCD display itself, the Video Inverter and the Backlight. Has anyone any ideas about trying to isolate the fault?

    Many thanks

    LCD has failed.

Thanks both. I've just noticed that there a dim image on the screen, visible when a light is shone on it. The flowchart indicates either the backlight or the invertor. It says the inverter is difficult to test and the backlight a 'delicate' job to replace. A case for a professional?

4 to 5 years. You may well be right given the likely cost of (professional) repair vis-a-vis replacement.

I've changed the LCD on one of these, its a handy job and step by step instructions are available through google.

If you could pick up a cheap LCD off ebay, would be worth sticking it in, they're not a bad laptop, once they're looked after.

    Thanks. I'll do that.
