Dug out my Nomad as I haven't used it in a couple of years and fancied a game of Gunstar Heroes. (Stupid NTSC copy!)

When it powers on, the sound comes on immediately. However there's no picture. Not even the backlight knob works.

After about two-three minutes the screen finally powers on. Everything then works. Including the variable backlight.

Any ideas? could the capacitors are leaky and need changing? General power issue? Nothing wrong with the LCD as when it finally powers on it's perfect.

im not an expert, but i think it could be slowly dying,or just warming up since you said you havent used it in years?,instance you said after 2-3 mins it comes up,since the lcd is made of crystals that its eventually taking longer.

Some else over in the sega-16 tech forums had the exact same problem. They reckon it's probably capacitors. They said that if the capacitors are dry/only half working it may take some time for the screen to boot.

Nice to know there's nothing wrong with the LCD anyway! The only way to get a new one for the Nomad is to take it out of another (broken) Nomad. There is no other LCD on the market that can replace it.

So all you folks out there with Nomads, look after the damn LCD screens.

Yeah they're replacement screen covers. Seem to be a lot of them on ebay. Which I really need to get actually as mine has a couple of nasty marks.

What you can't replace is the actual LCD displays. :( Once it goes it's gone for good.

Ah well, the machine also has an AV out. So I guess it's not totally useless when that happens.

Well its been switching on instantly now. No issues at all.Seems it just takes a bit to get it going after a cold period. I must boot the thing up on a regular basis.

On a related note, I ordered a replacement screen cover for it. Should have it looking nice and fresh once it's on. :)
