Hardly be many around yet but by all means ring around and let us know. The 27" models are only shipping in the last few days from pre orders as it is.

If anywhere gets them, it'll be the store in Cork or the Store in Liffey Valley Shopping Centre (Dublin)

I ordered mine the day after it was released and I only got mine on Thursday. Extremely impressed by it! The mouse though as nice as the idea is, is useless. Not having a third button is useless for cad and 3d applications. Theres a program called bettertouchtool which allows for some customisation but doesnt allow 3rd button pan functions.

I'd head up to Apple store in Belfast early someday. You can ring and reserve if they have them in stock and you will get a better price than you will in the Republic.

Cheers lads. Tried ringing pc world in liffey valley and jervis last night and this morning and nobody is answering the phone :( Can anyone confirm for definite that either shop has the i5 quad core for sale?

Cheers Dublin, parents are just back from Newry. I should have thought of trying somewhere up there. Oh well

Actually you won't get it cheaper. at current exchange rates it's probably marginally cheaper in the south than the North. I know it's hard to believe but it's £1599 in north and €1799 in south apple have finally corrected the price difference.

Plus the fun in carrying it. I'd be scared silly of dropping it, I'd rather drop a baby or even a pint!

At the very least you should be able to order your model into the store with a deposit.

Apple supplies are hard to get in Ireland. Lots of retailers have a newly imposed cap by which they can only get one piece of new hardware in to replace a sold one ie they've to sell through their existing stock first. Though I'm sure if you ordered in a specific model you'd get one.

God I hate pc world. Been ringing both liffey valley and jervis for the last two days and nobody has answered the phone once. Apple should think twice about letting these clowns sell their computers when you cant even contact them. It would put you off buying a mac at all!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,023 ✭✭✭Greentree_uk

yeah, no chance of getting hold of them. they never answer. perhaps you might value such customer service and try ringing an Apple Dealer. I'm sure you'll get better service at any of them in Dublin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

PC World are the apple dealers in southern ireland though I thought? There's no actual apple shop yet :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

The demand certainly exists for a mac store. Shame we don't get one.

Complain to apple directly, they have the power to change this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

And the search continues. Dropped into PC World in liffey valley today and was told they weren't getting any quad core imacs in :( Still cant get someone to pick up the phone in Jervis street. Don't suppose anyone works in around Jervis could pop in at some stage and have a look?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,023 ✭✭✭Greentree_uk

Quad core machines are in short supply. I believe the end of the month may see some delivered. but you'd need to be ordering now if you want one from christmas. I believe the core i7's give the 2008 mac pro's a run for their money! and yes if you want a Custom build machine PCworld won't do it. Only Proper Apple resellers can do this.

your barking up the wrong tree.

None of the Apple resellers have recieved any of these from Apple, the Apple store as of yesterday were saying 7-10days until shipping date.

Your best bet is to order one from either the Apple Store or an Authorised Reseller to secure one from the first batch delivered.

I'm well aware of the apple store shipping status. I cancelled my order on there in the hope of picking one up locally before the end of the month.

PC World told me on a previous occasion that they were getting the quad cores in. My local music shop (X-Music) are also getting Apples in and I'd rather buy from them as they are 5 mins from my house should anything ever go wrong with it.

i work in Amsterdam a couple of days most weeks and i was in one of the big dept stores which has an apple store, they did have stock, which i know is of no use to anyone here, but it shows that they are out there.

one other thing i used it for a about 15mins, its screen is very very impressive. i downloaded a movie trailer in HD from the apple site and its was really good.. i bought the new mouse which is an excellent piece of kit.

my 1 year old 24" is staring e-bay in the face, it a tough decision but one thing about the 27" is the screen is almost too big to be comfortable watching up close.

Arnotts in Dublin are now a Mac Reseller. They got in a 27" iMac and a 13" MacBook Pro two weeks ago. I bought the MacBook Pro. Great machine.

    Cheers
    Mick

Cheers Mick. I'll pop in at the weekend for a look. It seems a few places have got in the C2D 27" iMacs but I'm after either an i5 or i7 version. I have an i7 on order now from the apple store. Looks like it will be no faster getting one locally

The Mac Shop on Merrion Square has one or two 27" (&21.5") models in stock.

Just bought one today, typing on it now :)

Core 2 Duo only, €1499 inc VAT, standard spec as per the Apple store.

Cheers. Saw the C2D over in PC World during the week. Looks like I'll be holding out til december now for the i7.

Are the new iMac's definately in stock in PC World?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

Can only speak for the one in Liffey valley but yes. They have a 21.5 and 27" model in but they are both the Core 2 Duo model.

Ive suddenly got a ridiculous urge to buy one.

Do it, i got myself a 21.5 inch and its my best computer to date.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

If you're thinking of going for the C2D model I'd get the 21.5 otherwise I'd go for the i5 27". I don't fancy the graphics card in the C2D models to do great on the higher resolution of the 27" screen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,755 ✭✭✭tylerdurden94

Yeah trying to figure out which one to go for, suppose i will decide when i see them up close and personal.

Thats well and good for the screen but the i7 can only be ordered online and the i5 arent due in stores til earlyish december so have a read up on the performance/benchmark threads over on macrumors.com before dropping the cash. Let us know what you go for anyway. Can't wait for mine :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,755 ✭✭✭tylerdurden94

Ive only really gotten into Mac in the last couple of months, is there really a big difference between the 21.5 and 27?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

Completely depends on the specs you go for. There's a big difference between the lowest spec 21.5 and the highest spec 27 (base specs) so have a good read up on macrumors.com for all the info. The graphics cards in the base C2D models isnt great. Best bang for buck model is the 27" i5. It's a €300 upcharge on the C2D model but you get a much better quad core processor and a much better graphics card. It should last you a bit longer in the long run. It all depends on what you want to use it for and what your needs/budget are

I've just gone from a 20" to a 27" and the short answer is yes!

TBH, don't get the 27" unless you have a reasonably deep desk/table to put it on - it is possible to sit uncomfortably close, especially with the screen up to full brightness in a dim room...

Theres no reason to be uncomfortable... turn the brightness down. These are top of the line ISP screens. You shouldn't need full brightness anyway like on previous TN screens.

Can you measure how deep it is please? Better measure my desk :P

Yeah just going by the base specs on the website, the main difference i see is the HD is larger and there seems to be a better graphics card (obviously screensize as well) and at €400 extra i dont really see the justification of it, but then again i suppose when i see it i might change my mind and go for the impulse buy :D

Cheers for all the help by the way mucho appreciated.

Of course I did turn it down, but it is the first computer I've had that is so big/bright that it possible to sit too close.

It's justified for me. Graphics up to 4 times the performance of the card in the base model. And a 30% upgrade in processing power. I'll be using mine for games/development in vmware as well as music production so the cpu and hard drive upgrades are great for me and especially the screen size. I originally went for the i5 then cancelled and have gone for the i7

With my PC at the moment i have it connected up to my 32" tv so dont sit close at all to it and just lounge on my bed or chair, so dont think it should be much of a problem if i went for the 27".

The i7's are on almost on a performance level with year old mac pro's which is pretty impressive

I can understand it been justified for yourself then so, but for me ive no plans of doing anything crazy with (that i know of) i just want a comp that i know will be reliable and a pretty sweet piece of kit.

If you're not doing anything intensive or dont plan on playing new release game on high settings then the C2D should be fine. I'm just slightly off put by the fact that they are using the same processor and graphics cards as the last generation iMacs. Still think the i5 is the best bang for buck model. These are all in one units which means cpu/graphics can never be upgraded. The i5 should last longer than the C2D and depreciate less if you ever go to sell it or upgrade. For the €300 difference in price (for the 27" model) it should be a no brainer (if your budget allows of course)

I wouldnt be the worlds biggest gamer, have an xbox but just a couple of games more so for being social with friends, i have the money for it but trying to decide is the killer, i do like the full hd aspect of it on the bigger screen for watching movies/tv shows.

I have a macbook pro and its just so sweet and everything just works compared to my pc so i suppose that is just a factor in making the decision.

I know you can get some great software for video editing i could see myslef doing that and maybe some photoshopping kind of stuff.
