Heading to Berlin in a couple of weeks. Any recommendations on hotels to stay in, best neighbourhood to stay (I know Alexanderplatz is the most commercial - hoping for something a bit more cultural), and things to see?

    Any info much appreciated.

I stayed in the Park Inn Alexanderplatz and although the rooms are small it cannot be faulted for location. The Alexanderplatz Subway/Train station will take you anywhere you need to go in the city.

The bus tour is the best way to get your head around the city. The one I did started right behind the hotel.

I was there with the GF and we loved the Weinmeisterstraße area (slightly north of Alex). Its got a good vibe and there are some good places to eat and drink. Also the shops are out of this world (according to the GF).

There is a hell of a lot to do in Berlin and even to scratch the surface you'll need a very busy weekend.

The best things we did was take the tour of the Reichstag. Its free but the queues are pretty long. It offeres fantastic views of the city, especially at night.
There is a good "hermetically" sealed section of the Berlin wall in Bernauer Straße which I found very interesting.
I wasn't impressed with the Checkpoint Charlie museum or the Holocaust museum. You pay to enter and all thats on offer is room upon room of articles to read. No doubt they are interesting but its nothing you cant read online.

Enjoy your time there, its a facinating city and well worth the visit.

Generator Hostel is the only berlin Hostel you'll ever need. Extremely cheap but unbelievably clean, well run and right on an S-Bahn, U-Bahn and Bus route.
