Postage increased after winning auction

I found this auction on eBay US. When you click on "postage and payments" it clearly shows $5.99 for Ireland. I clicked on "buy it now" but was then brought to a checkout page which had postage for Canada as $5.99 but for international orders it was $10.00!! Now I paid the $10 anyway and the difference is only around €2.50 but is this fair? Would I be entitled to get back the $4 if I complained to eBay?

It clearly stated $5.99 in the auction, so you shouldn't have been charged, and shouldn't have paid, $10. Now that you have paid though, you've accepted the charges as shown to you, so there's probably nothing you can do. You could question the seller on why there's a different postage at checkout.

Seller may offer to refund the charge to you if you contact him directly, before leaving feedback and seller ratings.

Btw, I haven't looked at the auction before typing my reply..just general advice

    intl_shipping_icon.gif International Shipping
$5.99 USPS Air Mail (To Canada)
    $10.00 USPS Airmail (Other Countries)

It CLEARLY states 10 dollars for postage.
    Maybe you should try specsavers.
    LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP.

I've reported your post. In the "Shipping & Payments" section it says $5.99. I would say this overrides anything else written in the description section. Maybe you should try Specsavers. And learn some manners while you're at it.

    LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP.

    Maybe you should cop on.

The seller has a lot of conflicting postage options and prices. Misleading to say the least, but there's not a lot you can do about it. You can report the sale to eBay, but they won't do anything.

I think that happens when a seller doesn't set it up. In this case, the seller has set up rates for Canada, US and international. These should be correct, but are at odds with the rates listed in the description. The only official one is the calculator based one, and it's up to the seller to get that one right.

The 5.99 is for Canada only,, all other countries cost is 10.00 as stated

Nobody's slagging you, the only person being rude is yourself. If you would kindly look at the auction again there are two tabs about a quarter of the page down. One says "Description" and the other says "Shipping and payments". Now if you click that tab and select "IRELAND" you get $5.99!! So the seller has $10.00 on one section and $5.99 on another. So pardon me for getting confused. Personally I always go by the "Shipping and Payments" section as the description section is usually out of date or inaccurate.

Pardon me if the sayings were interpreted as rude,, i was only using my good sense of humour in a fun way, (was not intended rude) SORRY.

I only tried to get your attention to the post cost which states 10 dollars to all other countries except Canada which is 5.99. To save you getting in to any bother with the seller and then you would get bad feedback.
Sorry for coming across as rude, it was unintentional.

    Nope.

The seller has the wrong postal rates listed in their shipping and handling section. The text of the advert is not the right place to list these. As I said, it's up to the seller to get these right.

It's all academic anyway, as the $10 was eventually shown before payment was made. Their listing is wrong though.

Is the seller legally obliged to deliver it at that postage rate quoted in the calculator thingy? or can the description piece override the calculator thing?

I've seen a lot of ads recently with "Free P&P" listed via the calculator thingy but in the description there's a line that says "Note: Postage is not free".

Reported it to ebay last Friday. No response and the auction is still up.

Thats what I would have thought, this is quite worrying. In the past they used to have estimators for weight but they were simply estimates. In this case it is blatantly infers it is $5.99 and I would expect this to override any descriptions.

I am confused how the OP did a buyitnow and then the $10 seemed to automatically appear -I thought the price would be generated from the sellers listing, and should have been $5.99

I never bother looking at postage in descriptions if it is automatically listed like this, specifically for Ireland.

The official price is in the Shipping and Handling section that eBay specifically provides. Text in the item description should be irrelevant.

This seller has conflicting information posted, and is using the non-official (more expensive) one. This gives a false impression of how much it will cost if you do a search, as eBay will show the postage cost from the postage calculator.

How did the $10 charge appear at checkout? It should have come from the shipping calculator. If you received an invoice, the seller could have changed it.

Ye know the way when you enter into a bid or use a buy-it-now that you're entering into a legally binding contract? Well, with regards to the legal side, what is the purpose of the "description"? as in, are there limits or rules on what can and can't be included in there and is the description legally binding ?aside from the actual description of the item that is.

I saw an auction where in the description the seller has discounts for multiple buys, not discounts on postage (as that's "Free" for UK) but discounts on the price of the item. I'm assuming you can't actually hold them to this?

Before I got forwarded to PayPal there was a checkout page I'd never seen before. There was a shipping section with a drop down box. One of the options was Canada for $5.99 and the other was for international at $10.00...then I got put through to the familiar PayPal login and then pay now page. Sorry I can't remember more. I was in a hurry at the time.

I got the item then contacted seller about the postage. He refunded me the $4 and I left him positive feedback so all's fair really.
