Hi...Just wondering if any of you guys could help me out. I was looking at the citizens information website and it's a bit confusing.
I'm 26 and have never driven a bike in Ireland. I lived abroad before and did drive a scooter there for 2 years. I have a full Irish drving license categry B.
I will be doing the theory test soon and am wondering will I get the A1 or A license? I was looking to buy a 250cc bike but supose I should hold off if I can only get the A1 license.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

You can get the A licence.

What bike you thinking of getting?

OP, you can get the A license, but you will still be under the 25Kw/34bhp (or a power to weight ratio of less than 0.16kW per kg) restriction for the entire time you have a provisional license and 2 years after getting a full A license. So if you get the provisional A, you need 6 months before you can apply for your test and are still restricted for 2 years. It'd be a waste to get your 250cc bike and have to get it restricted.

You need to get A learner permit, but you will have to do a theory test first.
Depending on the type of 250cc bike you are getting,, it may not not restriction to under 25kw (33bhp)

Thanks for the replies. Good to know I'll get the A license.

I was looking at a 01 Honda rebel 250. I looked at magireland.org and they have a post that says it has a factory restriction of 33BHP. So if that is the case I assume I could drive away on that?

    Yep, you can.

There are Bandit 600's restricted out there too, so don't limit yourself too much.

You can actually ride any motorbike over 33bhp, that falls under the 0.16kW/kg rule.

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

    Howdy,

I'm just starting out also and this thread has been extremely useful. One other question - if I have a full car driving license do I need to do another theory test or do I get an exemption from this? Are the two licenses separate or is the A learner permit added onto my other driving license?

    Thanks,
    Gumby.

You'll probably need to do it again, give your local tax office a ring to confirm.
