Myself and my fiance have just started to try planning our wedding. The ceremony itself will be near Drogheda, so we're looking for a reception venue within a 30-45 minute drive. Anyone have any recommendations for hotels that can cater for approx 200 people?

I looked a few so far...

The nuremore hotel is very nice but a bit big for my numbers but ideal for 200 and as you Darver castle is nice as you mentioned already

Tankardstown - €7, 000 for venue rental so too expensive
Ballymagarvey - over €4000 for venue and 125 per head excluding wine!
The Village at Lyons - 120 per head
The Millhouse slane - my favorite so far but have no toilets in the function room, they are outside and smell real bad :-)

We'd heard about the price of tankardstown before, so we didn't even bother to contact them - they apparently only cater for 70-80 in the house and if you want a bigger wedding you've to pay them to hire a marquee (which i've heard costs €16000!!), and that's before anyone gets a dinner.

Ballymagarvey looks great on the net, and claims to have no venue hire, but they catch you out on the accommodation. We ruled it out when we saw their pricelist.

We've looked at some of the hotels in the area as well, and many of them are doing good packages. I particularly liked Trim Castle hotel, and have heard some good reports about it - has anyone had their wedding there?

I only know one person who's been to a wedding at the mill house in slane, so will double check with them if the toilet smell was an issue for them on the day - they didn't mention it to me. That's next on my list to go have a look around it.

Where is the village place you mentioned? I haven't heard of that one.

Its in Kildare and looks class on the website, but don't know about you but 120 a head is a bit much...

We had looked at City North Hotel in Gormanstown. The room is fantastic but too big for us (only 100) but you would fill it nicely with 200. It really is gorgeous and they have a really good package too.

    What about cabra castle?
Not technically in louth or meath but its on the border of both and an excellant venue

I had my wedding there and it would easily hold tje numbers you are looking for

    hiya,

this is my first post, i swear im not spam but i got married recently in Darver Castle in Dundalk.http://www.darvercastle.ie/. myself and my hubbie had a wonderful day and our guest loved the food and service. its family run venue and really caters for family occasion so thats why we chose it and they are lovely people to deal with.
it can cater up 300 people for a sit down meal. and then more for evening guest.
we had about 150 people and no body complained about a thing. well not to my face any way.

we went to view the village at lyons before hand to. it is amazing but with no accomodation for guests at all and the price being just a little to steep we ruled it out, but what a setting.

yeah we really loved it. it has nice grounds around it too for photos.
the only thing that you might preceive as problem though is accomodation.
the castle has 10 rooms albeit large ones. and they have 2 houses on the grounds as well run in a hotel style set up.

i loved it anyway and just in terms of service they were very good to myself and my husband so i wouldn't not reccommend them.

I've done weddings in Darver and there is a hotel nearby, Fairways that runs
courtesy buses to and from the venue, cheap rooms too. It is a lovely plac but
    doubt would feed 300

Yea, Our guest used the Fairways hotel. we reserved 20 rooms with them (no charge btw if you don't take up all the rooms you book) and they brought people too and from the reception. the only thing was , that their bus was slow coming over for the pre dinner drinks. alot of our guest missed out on the drinks reception due to waiting around for the bus. but it worked out fine in the end as we didn't leave people waiting while we got our photos taken.

as far as i know Darver do cater for 300 and I would believe they are more than capable of doing so. We had intended to have fairly large wedding and that is one of the reason we booked Darver due to the size of their reception room, but unfotunately due to ye old pay cuts we had to cut our cloth to our measure. any how nools enough of blabbering on, I think it could be well worth a look for you. We found Darver to be great setting, great food, good staff and most importantly a good price. no harm in checking it out.

Might be worth looking at ashtreebarn.com. it's a lovely place in Louth, they have a holiday rental but have started doing weddings too, a very unique venue and fantastic hosts. Well worth going for a look, I think their prices are very reasonable too. Contact details are on the ashtreebarn barn website.

Have you considered Johnstown House Hotel in Enfield, Co. Meath? Not sure if it's too far but we just had our wedding there last weekend and the hotel was fab, staff were lovely and the food was gorgeous. Definitely worth a visit if you feel it would be within your distance.
