bass guitar strings?

hi lads, just wondering i was just tuning my bass guitar and a string came loose its the A string anyway i thought it snapped but i was tightening there again a second ago and it started to creak is it snapped or any idea whats going on? at the moment its tuned to a d but wont go any further?
