Films about Rivalries

    Hi folks,

I was talking films to a colleague of mine today, and I realized that a lot of my favourite films are about rivalries between two (or more, sometimes) people. In this list I would include Heat, There Will be Blood, The Good The Bad and the Ugly, For a Few Dollars More (how about that scene with the hats!) and the Dark Knight, amongst others. Something about this format really resonates with me. Fans of The Wire will also remember the brilliance of Season 3 for this reason.

Am I alone here? Are there any others that I should be adding to the list? I'm sure our benevolent overlord Mr. Hungus could recommend a few from the Land of the Rising Sun and such parts. Such input would be most welcome.

    Thank you.

Hmm... Have you seen Ping Pong? There's an element of rivalry to the story.

    The Mighty Ducks. :pac: Nah seriously, I love Remember The Titans because it's a lot more than some dumb superficial rivalry;

    The King of Kong

Good choice. After watching it, I hated virtually everything about Billy Mitchell. I hated his stupid ties. I hated his ridiculous hair. I even hated his wife's ludicrously fake breasts!
    Top Gun

Not really my thing I'm afraid. It didn't take my breath away (pun intended). But's it been quite a few years since I saw it; maybe it needs another go-round.
    American Gangster

I saw the first half or so of this about a year back, and it looked very good. I need to get around to seeing the rest some time.
    Rocky IV

Now you're talking! Inter-cutting the training sequences was an ingenious move. It's not so much a film though as a series of music videos. There are four musical montages in that film. Four! And a total of seventeen minutes of dialogue, and I'd say three of those minutes are from the stupid robot (no, not Drago!)

12 Angry Men - judicial rivalry

Open Range - Old ways versus modernisation rivalry in a slow burning masterpiece

A History Of Violence - Sibling rivalry

The Outlaw Josey Wales - revenge rivalry

The Seventh Seal - Board game rivalry :)

The Prestige - Card up my sleeve rivalry

Yojimbo - Sergio will rip me off in a few years time rivalry

    Watership Down - Bunny rivalry

Shane/Pale rider - revenge coupled with good versus bad

The Last Of The Mohicans - Lots of rivalry here including who has the best hair.

    Oldboy - revenge again

Jaws - wants to eat versus does not want to be eaten rivalry

Rocky II - Rocky versus Creed again nuff said

Hell if you think about it, most films have a rivalry going on at some level. Be it for revenge, good versus bad, or to catch a big fish that wants to eat you. Based on the films you listed that you liked, the above is what came to mind first.

Nothing obscure on the list, but they would tick the boxes going by what you said you wanted.

Since you liked Dark Knight you might like The Prestige, it's also directed by Christopher Nolan and it's a brilliant rivalry film.

The Duellists is a great rivalry movie set during the Napoleonic wars.

It's Ridley Scott's directorial debut starring Keith Carradine and Harvey Kietel as arch enemies who fight a number of duels over a period of 15 years.

Well worth checking out if you haven't seen it
