    Hi All,
A friend of mine wants to start a small business selling jewellery and clothing sourced abroad. They wanted to fly to places like Thailand, China and USA to source the stuff but I said there must be a good web site that they can order from.
Does anybody know of such a site?
What are people's experience in dealing with import sites?
    Thanks in advance.
    B.

    Hi

just wanted to make sure that your friend is careful about buying from the places that you have mentioned, as a jewellery designer myself I must be careful of products I buy to use in my designs coming from all of these places, ie china, usa, thialand... it's grand if it's sterling silver or gold. But please ensure any plated metal products comply with EU law a bit like the carbon content in Chinese toys.... jewellery products have similar laws...

Be careful to check with the supplier, I have only quite recently wanted to trade with someone in the US who supplies world wide but was clueless as to the regulations.....

My advice would be, if you ask them about it and they don't know what you are on about then don't trade with them.

An ex-girlfriend of mine used to work for an Irish company specialising in jewelery. It was her job to source the stock and meet with suppliers etc so she'd fly out to Asia quite a lot. It seemed a very lengthy process and a lot of travelling around to meet different suppliers and go through big catalogues of stock.

If your friend is going to use import sites they would have to be very careful with putting in big orders with companies. Even if the samples look great, that could just be the best stuff sent to give a false impression of the true quality coming off the production line.

A good approach may be to contact a similar business in another country and just ask for advice. If they see you as no competition then hopefully they won't mind letting you know who their suppliers are etc.
