Ive just realised i cant find my passport and i am travelling to krakow next friday week.

Ive rang the passport office and its going to cost me €130 for a new passport.

Is there an alternative identity card i can use to travel?

Some airlines require passport, some don't, im pretty sure ryanair requires passport for travel all the time.

Are you travelling for work or for personal reasons?? i'd get ferry to england, and train to krakow if i was going there, make a few stops on the way.

You would have to have a valid passport now for all travel into the EU - Ryanair will not accept anything other than a passport or National ID card.

Aer Lingus etc will accept a driving licence etc only on Irish/UK flights.

You'll need a passport for that flight.

Not strange at all. This would do the trick, if Ireland had an identify card.

There is a special arrangement between Ireland and the UK (the Common Travel Area) that allows other forms of ID to be used if the airlines are willing to accept them. Aer Linugs allow certain alternative forms of ID. Ryanair do not. It is up to the airline in this case.

Anywhere outside Ireland and the UK, you are faced with normal EU rules. These clearly say a valid passport or national ID card is absolutely required. Since Ireland has no national ID card (neither does the UK), a passport is your only option. This has nothing to do with the airlines. It is a EU regulation. You are going abroad after all.

Even if Ireland were in Shengen and there were no border checks between Ireland and its European neighbors, you would still be required to bring a passport or national ID. Going abroad is going abroad .
