    Hi there,

I was hoping in January 2010 to go somewhere for a couple of weeks and do some running.I was thinking of maybe somewhere in the Rift Valley? Is there any high altitude camps - that anyone would recommend?

There was a bit of chat about this a couple of weeks ago (here). It hasn't gone anywhere but it hasn't gone away, if you know what I mean.

One of teh posters here also knows an Irish lad who is an agent and runs training camps, when I get myself together I'm going to drop him an email.

The one advisory seems to be that it takes a bit of time to acclimatise to altitude so you need at least 2 - 3 weeks

font romeu seems to be one of the best sports for Irish runners.Fairly cheap and not far to travel.
Paula Radcliffe does alot of training there !!! http://www.paularadcliffe.com/diary/014.php

No experience of Kenya. I've been to Font Romeu and it's beautiful in the Summer. Not much to do in the town itself but nice places nearby if you wanted to a bit more than train. It's a ski resort in the Winter though so I'm not so sure how much running/biking you could do!!!

South Africa is an option if you want a bit of good weather. You can get lucky with Flagstaff but it's probably going to be pretty cold. Haven't been to Morocco but it might work.......

Kenya is probably the easiest option.

Font Romeu would be cold and would probably have snow. Same for anywhere at altitute in Morocco or the USA.

Kenya has lots of runners, good weather and is cheaper. The standard of english spoken is quite high and the people are welcoming. It might be hard get into a camp but just stay in a town with lots of runners and you'll be fine.

I've just assumed this was for running. If it's for triathlon, Kenya mightn't be great as they don't have many tarmac roads for cycling.

Ethiopia could be another option. Don't really know anyone who's been but it probably has similar (slightly colder) weather to Kenya. Going by their elites, the standard of english wouldn't be as high.

www.velopyrenees.com are a tri/run/bike guesthouse/training centre (gotta love slashes) in the Pyrenees. Run by a wildly fit British couple. Very nice, very friendly, excellent food. Well set up for serious training - route maps and GPS, near several Tour de France cols, masses of trail running, lakes for swimming... the list goes on. They will run/bike with you a lot of the time, but you better be fit.

Not terribly high altitude but otherwise excellent. Check out the website.

I've no connection with them, except to have spent a week there a couple of years back, and now thinking how great it would be for a week or two of running and biking!

If anyone is interested in getting a group to go to Kenya for altitude training, let me know. I can get someone to arrange things in Eldoret. Bear in mind though, that it won't be like Lanzarote and it will be far from 3 star. You will also need to be fit before you go, otherwise you are wasting your time.
Don't send e mails to anyone in Kenya unless they have been recommended to you.
