    Hi guys,

Just wondering if this is a good spec for a laptop? It's for my mam, so all it's needed for is Microsoft Office (Word, mainly), Internet and emailing, storing photos and dvd player.

    • 15.4” WXGA Brilliant View LCD
    • Intel® Celeron® Processor M560
    • 1 GB DDR2 RAM
    • 120 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive
    • Windows Vista Home Basic
    • DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive
    • Wi-Fi Wireless Compatible
    • Intel GMA Graphics

Is there anything else I should be looking for?

Thanks everyone, really appreciate your help.

It's pretty basic but if all she needs it for is word and internet then it should be fine.

I would check and see if there's a windows 7 upgrade available for free as Vista is a lot slower. If you're stuck with Vista i'd try and up that RAM to 2GB if possible.

Just make sure you're not paying too much for it. I would say about €350 is about right ish.

No its really not that good.
It'l handle word no problem but will be a little slow with the internet and any photo editing software. Or any software that is even a little demanding

    • 15.4” WXGA Brilliant View LCD
    - Fine
    • Intel® Celeron® Processor M560
    - Meh
    • 1 GB DDR2 RAM
    - Hmmm, you can always upgrade to 2Gb later for €20
    • 120 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive
    - Crap
    • Windows Vista Home Basic
    - Oh God NOOOOOO - Seriously, get Win 7 home premium or even XP Home but not 'Vista Home Basic'. It just doesn't work.
    • DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive
    - Meh
    • Wi-Fi Wireless Compatible
    - Assumed for anything made in the last 7 years
    • Intel GMA Graphics
    - Don't expect to play.... anything.

Yep, I agree. Thats the kind of spec i'd expect from a budget laptop in the €300-350 range. If that's what its costing, then its fine, you won't do much better.

However if its costing closer to €500 then you can definitely do much better. For example, there's a Dell Inspiron 15 at the moment for €430 with a dual-core T3000, 4GB ram and Win7 Home Premium.Link

Aye, it'd have to be very cheap to be worth it. Tbh, i wouldn't be all the keen on vista basic though.
