    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/nov/10/canada-teenager-alive-on-ice
A Canadian teenager has been rescued, and apparently unharmed apart from minor frostbite, after drifting for almost three days on an ice floe together with two polar bear cubs and the carcass of their mother which he shot in self defence.

The 17-year-old, who was named locally as Jupi Nakoolak, was suffering from hypothermia after the temperature fell below -15C, but was otherwise well, conscious and speaking to his rescuers, who crawled across ice floes to reach him.

Nakoolak told them he shot the adult bear when it came too close, and then got as far away as possible on the ice from the cubs, which remained with the body.

Much better than that stupid kid in the balloon story.

He obviously wasn't using his loaf. He should've cut open the dead polar bear, eaten it's insides and then made a nice cosy nest inside it for himself & his 2 new furry friends to snuggle up in!

    Food & Warmth!

    Amature

I hope the corpse was preserved enough that he could have it taxidermied. It would make an excellent conversation piece.

Didn't do a great job of putting distance between him and the cubs.

They're most likely talking about a pretty small non-continent size piece of ice they were all floating on

I'm imagining this piece of ice to be roughly 2 metres squared.

riddle me this. If you have one polar bear, two cubs and one child on one side of the river and you need to get them all to the other side of the river on an ice flow. You cannot put the child on the same flow as the mother or the mother will eat the child and you cannot put the child on the same flow as the cubs or it will kill the cubs. The ice flow can only take two at a time.

Polar bears are an endangered species , 17 year olds with guns are plentiful . Should have shot himself.

What would have been really cool was if Mamma bear had ate him and the 2 cubs were found wearing his hat and scarf.

A Chritmas card with a difference right there.

With that way of thinking it won't be long until humans are an endangered species

The ironic thing is that this started from a misunderstaning from his parents. The local shops had minimal supplies due to heavy ice, and Nakoolak's mother, Naniinte, wanted some chocolate. She declared at the end of the dinner "Id murder a penguin right now". Not wanting to disappoint his mother, Nakoolak went out, but could not find any penguins (what with being the other side of the world and all). So he murdered the closest thing he could find.
